Depends on the type of spend.
Non category spend, Amex SPG all day.

I swear I'm only 35 as I ask this question, but do most places take American Express? I think I remember a commercial from the early 90s insinuating most places didn't take Amex. That was obviously 20 years ago, so a lot has changed no doubt.

It's pretty universally accepted. Some mom n pops don't, but I can't remember the last time I was turned down for it.

I'm not brand loyal and don't focus on branded cards, so cards like the Amex SPG/gold/plat, Chase CSP/inks, or Barclays arrival are great cards due to transferability. If you don't like carrying many cards, it's still best to probably carry at least 2 of those.

i use an amex as my daily card. i'd say 90% of places i go take it. some cheap gas stations don't, and some smaller local restaurants don't. i keep a visa and/or mc in the wallet for these situations.

The only places I can think of off the top of my head that don't accept Amex (that I regularly visit) are Sam's Club, Johnny's pizza, and Strawns

If I downgrade my CSP card do I lose any transferability or anything at all relative to the points I have accumulated prior to downgrading?

Was just about to ask this... I won't be downgrading until November, but as of now, I've got close to 90k points built up and nothing to really use them on within that time period.

Yes, you lose transfer ability. Only Chase SP, Chase Ink Bold and Chase Ink Plus grant the ability to transfer UR points to partner airlines

Eta: a "workaround" is if you have a spouse, have them sign up for a CSP for the free year/bonus and you can send your points to them and they can get it to an airline (only their airline account though).
