Do you also realize that we pay farmers not to farm?

quote:

When last year’s drought drove corn prices to record highs, farmers with “harvest price option” policies were paid those inflated prices for what didn’t grow -- contributing to a record bill for taxpayers and record income for farmers. “There is no social justification for these subsidies,” says Smith. “This is a program that’s fundamentally designed to give money to farmers.”

Then what do we pay them to do? How are they contributing to the good of society?

The federal and state governments do not give individuals benefits not received in exchange for labor of any kind?

Please tell us how we don't. I want to hear this terribly.

This equals paying people who "refuse to contribute" in your mind?

To keep them involved in the economy.

It's all about consumerism.

They would be more active in the economy if they had to work for their pay. Moving to a system that removes cash handouts from the equation would go a long way in this.

How much money does the tax paying working class citizen piss away for people that refuse to contribute?

Roughly Zero.

My grandfather was a farmer but I have a big problem with subsidies especially the one you described.

It doesn't. But that wasn't the question either. Now answer mine: What specific government program pays people who refuse to work?

I don't get this. We blame Obama for the poor employment numbers, and accuse the government of cooking the books to hide the reality of the unemployment problem - but then we pretend that there are just all these jobs out there for the taking.

Which is it?

"Thanks for no jobs, Obama!"

Or

"They should just go out and get a job!"

If we just cut off government aid tomorrow, would all of these people be able to just go out and get a job even if they wanted to?

I say no. They would probably just end up on the street causing civil strife and not participating in the economy.

Why do people think money distributed as government handouts just disappears from the economy?

this is probably the real reason, along with entrenched interests who are part of the money flow.

It ain't voters. Poor people hardly vote.

Paying farmers not to grow crops was a Depression-era (read: FDR) substitute for agricultural price support programs designed to ensure that farmers could always sell their crops for enough to support themselves. The price support program meant that farmers had to incur the expense of plowing their fields, fertilizing, irrigating, spraying, and harvesting them, and then selling their crops to the government, which stored them in silos until they either rotted or were consumed by rodents. It was much cheaper just to pay farmers not to grow the crops in the first place.

This was done when we had a largely agrarian society and at a time when such an extreme program was needed to keep the country fed. Like any government handout though, it's gone far beyond its original bounds over time. In a time where we face rising prices from not only monetary inflation, but a worldwide food shortage the last two things we need are:

1. Programs that pay farmers not to farm
2. Laws requiring we burn our food for fuel (Ethanol bill... thanks GWB ).

Medicaid, Food Stamps, Welfare, and to a lesser extent Disability.

I know people who are on all of these programs, who have the capability to work, who have worked before, but refuse to work because they make enough in free hand outs. And in fact, brag about collecting government hand outs.

You are kidding yourself if you honestly believe these free hand outs don't prevent people from getting jobs.

And here I was thinking it was Obama's poor handling of the recovery.

So you're saying that the recovery is in full swing and that there are jobs to be had out there for unskilled people?

Who knew?

No. Stop putting words in my mouth. People on free government hand outs are not actively searching for work. If you are actively looking for a job, you will eventually find one.
