Thing is, Genesis were never a "jam band". Even in things like Watcher, Can-Utility, Moonlit Knight, Aisle of Plenty, Dancing on a Volcano, etc. there was hardly a dull moment.

If you don't like the shorter stuff I gave you, chances are good you won't like anything else.

These are about as radio-pleasing as Genesis got with Gabriel:

Genesis was the anti-jam band. There was very little improvisation.

I don't like really proggy prog...if that makes any sense

There is a thin line between really good prog rock, and overindulgent garbage, and even the best prog bands teeter on the brink of that line for a lot of their stuff.

It's definitely a type of music that I could understand a lot of people not enjoying

I love it (even the overindulgent garbage) but I fully agree with this statement.

Like all genres, there was plenty of dross mixed in with the diamonds.

Very general rule of thumb - if a prog band made only one or two albums, there was a reason for it. That said, even most of the greats have fair amounts of crap/lesser stuff in their repertoire.

my exposure to prog rock was limited to listening to king crimson or rush when high in college.

i liked neither. in fact, i cannot stand rush.

I would consider Rush a hard-rock band who sort of flirted with a progressive veneer at one point, but I would never have called them "prog". That phase lasted for a few albums, then they took a considerable mainstream turn.

Haven't listened to KC in a long time but they were true giants.

Agreed about Rush. Not what I'd call prog. King Crimson for sure were giants of prog rock.

Here's another one I just thought of. Phil Manzanera from Roxy had a side project for a while called 801. Members included Brian Eno, Bill MacCormick (from Quiet Sun), Francis Monkman (from Curved Air). The name comes from a lyric off of Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy.

I like most of Phil Manzanera's music. His mid-2000's stuff like 6PM and and 50 Minutes later is good music. I think my favorite is Listen Now (801).

I got to see Brand X in San Francisco in 1979 with Phil Collins on drums. That band absolutely rocked...

On a somewhat related note, I saw the N'th generation of YES a few weeks ago in Houston. They played the entirety of Close to the Edge and Fragile. Starship Trooper and I've Seen All Good People were encores. Jon Davison does a credible job filling in for Jon Anderson. But the missing piece is really Rick Wakeman. When the solo parts came up for Roundabout, etc. Geoff Downes just doesn't cut it. I don't think I'll go see them again until/unless RW rejoins the band (which is not likely).

I gave up on Yes after Tormato. well, really after 90125 or whatever that one was.

On a postcard, have I missed anything?

Probably Discipline in the modern era. Lark's Tongue in Aspic or Starless and Bible Black for the 70's version.

Agreed, that's a great album. I have a few outtakes from that album that came on a PM compilation. Those songs are good too. His previous band Quiet Sun was pretty interesting.

Color me jealous as frick. I'd have given anything to see them back in those days.

I kinda feel the same way. I had tickets to see them in Denver a few weeks ago but unfortunately I wasn't able to go. But without Wakeman it would be a bit lame anyway.

Not really-although Drama as a stand alone album was really good. A bit more straight ahead rock with some good songwriting-and did I say it rocked..Worth a listen if you gave up on Yes after the really crappy Tormato album.
