Funny thing is that I didn't read most of them while in high school.
I skipped the assigned reading in high school and read the books in college.
Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, For Whom the Bell Tolls are 3 of my favorites.
While the plot in Gatsby is very good, the imagery and prose make that book

I actually really enjoy reading and would read all assigned books we had. My favorite ones are: The Things They Carried, A Separate Peace, 1984, Huck Finn, Old Man and the Sea (loved learning all about Hemingway), and Lord of the Flies.
Haven't seen Things They Carried so guessing nobody else had to read it... But it was a badass book. It's pretty much about an American platoon in Vietnam and each chapter is from a diff characters POV. I've read it again a couple of times since high school and it's still a great book. If you're interested in that sort of thing, go for it. Written by Tim O'Brien.

No fans of A Brave New World? That was my favorite
Least favorite: The Scarlet Letter, Great Expectations (had to read this in 7th fricking grade)
Most overrated: the giver

Best: huck Finn
Worst: a yellow raft in blue water. Sonuvabitch that book was terrible.

Back in grammar school we were asked to read Kon-Tiki, it was great for a youngster.

Can't believe animal farm was on the second page. One of my favorites. To kill a mockingbird and grapes of wrath also.

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. Read it in Biology in High School. Fascinating stuff. Not the best novel I have ever read but the best school read book.
