You mean the guy that got caught falsifying snapper harvests in the early 90s? That Steve Tomeny?

This is sad that so many recreationals have this opinion. They talk about the commercials like they are different from everyone else. We live in a capitalist country where everyone wants to make more money.

True, but commercials harvest fish until the population collapses. They've done it in NE and NW. Here in La with redfish and specks. As they deplete the resource price goes up therefore effort is increased. They don't stop nor police themselves until the govt shuts them down.

As for as the less than 400 interests holding comm licenses and controlling 51% of the GOM TAC, they are far from old and going out of business.

How is this any different than the whitetail issue years back or alligators or even buffalo when Europeans first got here. It's the same exact thing. Buffalo hunters weren't commercial fisherman. It's human nature.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of these new permit holders are charter guides. A lot of the old fisherman sold their permits for big money I heard.I don't know this for a fact but that would be my guess.

When my dad owned his seafood dock in Venice, they were mostly Vietnamese and older white fisherman. There weren't many young fisherman left in the business. Not as many as previous generations. Most of those guys didn't even have high school educations. My dad went to eight grade then trapped/fished until he was in his mid 30's. That's what they did back then and pretty much all they had to do. The oil business wasn't nearly as big back then and there wasn't a lot of other ways to make money. In his mid 30's he opened a dock. My dad made me go to college and get my college degree because he didn't want me in the business. I'm very thankful that he pushed education on me because if I was a commercial fisherman I would have a hard time surviving now. Or I wouldn't be making the money I make now at least.

No, they were commercial hunters.

So charter guys have "big money" to blow on another permit? I'd say they don't, but that would be my guess.

My guess would be that you are a charter guide.

Yes they would have money to "blow" being that they could use it to make money off of for years to come.

I was until the commercial guys ran me out of business with their greed. Show me one fishery that was commercially harvested over the years that they haven't fished to collapse?

My guess is you have profited from the commercial fisherman.

So when did you stop being a commercial guide? And from what year to what year?

Yes, I already stated that. My dad was a commercial fisherman growing up and owned a seafood dock in Venice, LA for 25 years. He got out of if about 10 years ago.

I will never go back into it. I'm a recreational fisherman now and always have been and will be that way until I die. Grew up fishing with rod and reels down there since I had a snoopy pole.

Thought about starting a charter business a few years ago but there are so many of them now. I would say the market on them may be oversaturated but who knows.

So what you are saying in a nutshell; it's okay for less than 400 old geriatric Vietnamese and gumps control 51% of the TAC of red snapper fishery of the entire GOM? Other than padding your inheritance, where do you think this is fair? They've already said they've never caught this many this close. So who else falls on the sword for these 400 that are going to feed Obamas children? Rec impact on local economy is far greater than comm., they go in kill fish, hopefully record catch and go home. Rec guy, rents room, buys bait, ice, beer, tackle, sammiches, gas, licenses, catches 2 fish. Give them 365 days economy benefits way more

Never said any of that. If I had my way, the quota would be upped and it would be split evenly between commercials, charter guides and rec's.

I don't need any of my parent's money. I can make my own.

Kind of a dramatic statement huh?

The impact is big on all three groups. With commercials 4 different groups touch money (fisherman, dock, processor, and restaurant).

I can't disagree about it should be 365 days now. Like I said before, I am only a recreational fisherman now. I fish pretty much every weekend or every other weekend and I fish snapper pretty often too.
