Have any of you had experiences where you were away from home on vacation when a storm hit close by?

You mean you were away and a storm hit your home or hit where you were on vacation?

Not quiet the same but left Miami as a TS was coming. Had to fly out in it. Surprisingly was one of the smoothest flights I have ever had.

When I was a snot nosed kid, my family went to spend a week at my uncle's camp on Bay St. Louis.
3 days in Hurricane Camile was just off the coast. We found a pay phone at a store, called my uncle who was leaving to come help batten down the camp.
As we started doing what we could a friend of my uncle showed up to inform us that my uncle had a stroke while driving and crashed on the way to met us. He was paralyzed for the rest of his life.
We did what we could. But it didn't matter.
We returned a week later and could find nothing left of his camp.

I was at a work conference in Miami and they ended it a day early because a storm named Katrina was heading for Florida--so I flew home to New Orleans!!!

Few summers ago I was in the Hamptons and had to leave a day early bc of hurricane. Irene I think. They closed the airport just hours after we got out.

Was in Tampa/St. Pete when Hurricane Dennis came through in 2005. Was a ways out in the gulf but flooded the hell out of the area we were in. Ended up hitting a bunch of remnants of it driving home.

Was in Gulf Shores one year and a tropical storm came through.....it was pretty wild. Water was all the way up to the rims of the vehicles parked under the house. After the season was over NOAA actually re-classified the storm as a Cat 1 hurricane. I think the storm name was Bill, but not sure.

Yeah the one in Florida in like 1992 or 93, can't remember which one. Made us leave early, I was 4 or 5 and I'll never forget it.

ETA: it was fricking Andrew

Yes, hurricane Noel.

Grand Bahamas Island for a destination wedding. It was a great trip. We even got to stay a couple extra days.

Hitting 3 irons 50 yards in to the wind, calling the dive shops every day to see which ones would take us out. Blowing sand stinging the shite out of your legs.

Only lost power briefly one evening but eating by candle light on the beach is awesome.

Oh and the tropical wave that eventually became hurricane Katrina knocked out power on St Thomas during our honeymoon. That happened.
