Rand Paul Calls Hillary Clinton a 'War Hawk' in NBC Interview

RUSSELL BERMAN
August 22, 2014

It looks like 2016 can't come soon enough for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) The increasingly likely presidential candidate lobbed an early salvo at Hillary Clinton in an NBC interview set to air Sunday, calling the presumptive favorite for the Democratic nomination a "war hawk."

If you wanna see a transformational election, let the Democrats put forward a war hawk like Hillary Clinton, and you'll see a transformation like you've never seen.”
The comments were sent out by NBC on Friday as a tease for its extended interview with Paul on Meet the Press, which was conducted during his trip to perform free eye surgeries in Guatemala. (Paul is an ophthalmologist.) Elected in 2010, Paul has been ramping up his political operation and is likely to test his more libertarian views in a presidential run in 2016.

Clinton, the former secretary of state, has long been seen as more hawkish than President Obama, and she made news in an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg earlier this month by criticizing the president's decision not to arm Syrian rebels beginning in 2012.

With ISIL's progress in Western Iraq, anyone saying that we should have armed the Sunni opposition in Syria will look like a fricking clown in two years. They look dumb to most with a grasp on reality now.

Obama's decision/indecision WRT removing Assad was the luckiest frickup any President has stumbled upon in some time.

He's taking a page straight out of the Obama's playbook that propelled him to victory in 2008. As a matter of fact, this wasn't just a page out of Obama's playbook, it was his entire book in the primaries.

By the way RollTide, as Paul continues to mesmerize liberal pundits, here are some links to articles that I'm sure you will appreciate:

He should thank Putin for giving him a face-saving way out of that clusterfrick.

No, they'll just utter the magic words of "well, there are no good solutions now, but if Nobama had just armed the moderates in 2012 then we'd be set!" That there was ever an actual force of moderates in Syria to arm (as opposed to a handful of Western-friendly officers and bureaucrats rattling the can on behalf of their less-photogenic, more-takbeery friends and setting up carefully guided tours for McCain, sup FSA) will simply be assumed. The great thing about counterfactuals is that they're not falsifiable.

Cf: Literally any article written by a neocon or liberventionist on Ukraine. "If Nobama had only acted more strongly in [NO SPECIFICS GIVEN] then Putin would never have had THE STONES to invade this country full of Russians literally next door to him!"

He's trianglating.

He is trying to get kids and blacks to vote for him or be so indifferent they stay home.

Definitely doesn't hold back . As for 16, he is definitely gaining more support from me.

Hope he keeps doing what he's been doing.

More examples of counterfactuals:

If Carter had been "stronger", the Iranian Revolution wouldn't have happened.

If Obama had been "stronger", the Arab Spring wouldn't have happened.

Here's how George Will put it when Mubarak was toppled three years ago:

quote:

Those Americans who know which Republican will win next year's Iowa caucuses can complain about those who did not know that when a Tunisian street vendor set himself on fire, he would set a region afire. From all other Americans, forbearance would be seemly.

It also would be amazing, because there is a cottage industry of Barack Obama critics who, not content with monitoring his myriad mistakes in domestic policies, insist that there must be a seamless connection of those with his foreign policy. Strangely, these critics, who correctly doubt the propriety and capacity of the U.S. government controlling our complex society, simultaneously fault the government for not having vast competence to shape the destinies of other societies. Such critics persist because, as Upton Sinclair wrote in 1935, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."

Well that is certainly not universally true, is it. It depends on the fact being countered, and on the nature of the counter itself.

The appropriate steps in Syria and the Ukraine would have been diplomatic, and would have substantially preceded any military action. Hard to expect such diplomatic anticipation though, if your team is so inept that it doesn't even anticipate a threat in Benghazi on 9/11/2012.

Well that's not fair, how could they possibly anticipate someone posting a video on YouTube?

We'll it''s not the 19th century anymore but he's probably the closest thing to it in the modern political age. Aside from his dad of course.
