I think a quality light brown or tan loafer is probably the most versatile shoe. Great with khakis. Fine with light dress slacks. Good with jeans. Some will try it with shorts and it can work.
To me, black lace up oxfords work with suits and dark colored slacks. Arguably with jeans, but I'm not a fan of that in this region.

Do you try EE or EEE sizes? For the longest time I would size up in shoes because I have wide feet and felt a larger size fit me better. While buying a pair of nicer dress shoes, the salesman measured my feet and suggested a smaller size in EEE. Turned out to be a good move.

EE or W is what I buy. I just feel the round toes look weird wide. I don't know. I'm definitely not GQ.

For younger employees too, it's always good to be ready to go if your boss wants to take you to a meeting, court, lunch, whatever.
At my firm, we're pretty casual in summer. We have a summer associate/law clerk who comes in only part time, but he wears nice slacks, loafers and button downs to class because he'll come in the office. Not all of our part time summer kids do that. Hence, if I need to pull someone into a meeting, it's gonna be that kid.

Gotcha, I just think it's asinine to think that a guy wearing black shoes and khakis really boils peoples blood in that way.. its craziness I tell you..

I am bored at work. He actually had an inter-company interview today and wore black slacks and black lace up with slightly squarish toes.

He has flat wide Fred Flintstone feet so I agree with the guy who says round toes look weird.

I think oxblood/maroon lace ups are more versatile than black....because they go with everything including khaki.

My Dad is the same way. He buys Quad E width dress shoes from new balance... He basically at his age is says I don't give a shite.. My feet won't hurt

Oh yeah, they still make them. I have two pairs of Magnanni's and they both have wooden soles.

my job requires khaki's, a polo or button down shirt, and some dress shoes.

I think the contrast is a lot for all but the nicest khakis or tan dress slacks, but I agree maroon/merlot/cordovan/etc. can be substituted for black in all but the formal settings.

None of those are wood. Maybe you are mistaking leather soles for wood. Sometimes they use wood to increase the stack height in the heel, but not for the actual outsole.

I don't know. I can promise you the two at my house are wood. They never came with leather soles. Let me see if I can post a pic of them when I get home.
