Terminator was just mind blowing when it came out. Totally. Portrayed Arnold as the bad guy, something the later movies did not do, unfortunately.
Aliens was as good but didn't have the same shock value because we had seen the first one at that time.
Predator was awesome, just not as ground breaking as those two.

I wouldn't call Aliens a parody, it just isn't nearly as good as Alien, and it's a completely different film all together.
And it's almost pure action. The beats are action, the tropes are action. It's a science fiction film in setting only.
This makes it weak on the:

Which is a Problem for Predator as well.. If you said rank these four films, Aliens might be a little higher....maybe.
The really problem is how good The Thing actually is and it's still underrated, because, like you said, it might be the best film of the 80's. It's certainly Carpenter's best film. I put it in the class with Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Seven Samurai, etc. It's THAT good. Not just great, it's a phenomenal film really. There are few films that can make you doubt characters the way that film does. Murder on the Orient Express? Probably. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)? Maybe. But The Thing, just an awesome movie all around.
