I have only been there twice, both times when driving to and from Florida. I stayed at a hotel on Government Street, both times on Monday Nights in June 2011.

I just remember everything feeling dead and lifeless, I didn't really see any people around, it seemed like a ghost town. Which was strange because the downtown area was a decent size, and being a waterfront city, it should have been a bit more alive.

Was it just because I was there on a Monday or does Mobile just suck?

I've heard they invented Mardi Gras. That's all I got.

All of the "fun" things happen across the bay over in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores.

Geographically well positioned. Neat little downtown. The city has lots of potential. Mobile is like The gamecocks football program circa 90s.

It ain't too bad. I stay downtown all the time for work and can usually find something to entertain myself. But I drink like a feathered Indian and like to talk to strangers.

Of course it was bc it was Monday night. I've never gone anywhere that Monday night was all that lively. (Except if MNF is going on. And even then you would need to find a sports bar closer to the residential areas.)

I used to live downtown in an 2nd story apartment on Dauphin St. Miss that place...$1000/month for 2br/2ba with balcony and my own garage in a historic building. I enjoyed Mobile because I could walk to the bars and restaurants downtown. Fun during Dauphin St. Beerfest, Mardi Gras etc. Good size city but not too big and close to the beach which is cool.
Picture of my old place on the left with the balcony.

I lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast from 1999-2004, and I went to Mobile a lot. Downtown was jumping Friday-Saturday nights. It seemed like there was more going on there on the weekends than there generally is in Downtown Baton Rouge. It was kind of like a little, cleaner version of New Orleans.
I dunno, I liked Mobile a lot. They had a real nice minor league baseball stadium and some decent restaurants. My wife has a new sales job that requires she call on customers in Mobile and I'm looking forward to tagging along with her.
