Of course you know trackfan that the Muslim communities within Israel itself are quite content with the laws barring Jewish-Muslim interfaith marriages because by extension, it gives them control over marriage, divorce and family law in their own communities. If everything was opened up and religious leaders didn't have control over marriage law in Israel, then those Muslim (and Druze and Arab Christian) leaders would have to relinquish control. That's in part what's perpetuating that issue.

Ridiculous! Of course we know only the Jews in Israel wanted those laws.

Interracial couples in the U.S. never had it this bad even at the height of Jim Crow.

Um, seems as though a few fanatics threw a fit but the wedding party enjoyed the protection of the state. I know you're an older black man, so there's no way you believe this is worse than Jim Crow was. You know, when interracial marriage was literally illegal.

Can we all agree that religious authorities should not be the arbitors of state-sanctioned marriages, and that nations where they do call the shots, aren't truly democratic?

There's no doubt that interracial couples caught hell at one time in certain parts of the country, but I don't think they ever needed this type of heavy police protection just to keep them alive during the ceremony.

EDIT: Besides, this is 2014, not 1914, and the reason given by the folks on Capitol Hill for our unquestioned support for Israel is that Israelis share our values. It may be true that they share our pre-civil rights values, but certainly not our modern-day values.

No b/c they just hung people with no repercussions. The citizen took the law in his own hands to protect the white race.

There's some truth to that, but don't we look back at those days as a dark chapter in our history?

Sure, and I think the majority of Israeli Jews would agree with you.

Compared to what? If we're comparing them to their neighbors, Israel is easily the most democratic country in the Middle East.

Which would you rather live under in this regard if there were no other options, Palestinian rule or Israeli rule? Not a rhetorical question I really want to know your answer to this.

With with regards to marriage, I would want to live in the place that was the most permissive and tolerant, and the Palestinian Authority doesn't ban interfaith marriage. From wikipedia:

quote:

In 2007, the United States Department of State released a study of the state of religious freedom in the Palestinian territories as part of its annual international study. According to the report, Christians and Muslims enjoyed good relations although tensions existed. Existing tensions between Jews and non-Jews remained high during the reporting period, and continuing violence heightened those tensions. The report concluded that the PA government policy contributed to the generally free practice of religion, although problems persisted related to interfaith-conflicts, including discriminatory and preferential treatment.

Perhaps it's relative. Israel certainly shares more of our values than its neighbors. And we should be transparent in saying that the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians is not really analagous to that between blacks and whites under Jim Crow. The context, for one, is entirely different.

FYI, interfaith marriage in the Palestinian territories is common.
Since they are common, please tell me about a recent marriage between a Jewish male and Muslim female in Palestinian territories.

As a matter of faith, Arafats wife was a Chrisitian.
Was a Christian being the operative term. Suha Tawil converted to Islam before marrying Yasser Arafat. So your example is not evidence of interfaith marriages at all.

Actually, Turkey is more like is than other countries in the region. In some ways, they're even more secular they we are. All the other countries, ichluding Israel, are either official theocracies or de facto theocracies. And remember that Israel has no constitution, and it has over 30 laws on its books that preferences Jews over Gentiles.

Of course there are differences but there also similarities. Aparthied South Africa, with the bantustans, the restriction of movement and the identity cards is a better analogy, but there are no perfect analogies.

I think by sharing our values, I believe that means those in Israel and those in the U.S. agree that Arabs should bath more than one a month.

Dumb azz post.

Israel has muslim trying to destroy their country and a lot of muslim countries whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel. This woman is getting married to a muslim and you have a few people protesting.

Now I am going to destroy your analogy.

What would happen in a muslim country where a muslim woman married a Jew or a christian? We know the Sudan woman was placed in jail while pregnant and sentenced to death that only a worldwide shame campaign was able to overcome.

Christians are murdered for being christians all over the middle east.

Now your analogy looks stupid because you don't think shyt through.
