Like is it grounded in reason?

quote:

I am a 24 year old male who has lived in Louisiana for most of my life. I graduated from highschool here, I received my bachelors degree here, and I am in pursuit of my masters degree here. I am not suggesting that the entirety of Louisiana is racist, nor am I suggesting that everyone is out to get me, but there are few things that concern me that I wonder if concern my caucasian brothers.

- 1. I am afraid to drive in my vehicle once it has become dark outside. It is not in bad shape, I believe it does not fit the profile of a vehicle that would be considered suspicious, but never the less I am afraid as I have been pulled over multiple times. I am not rude in fact, I feel as though I pretend I am a sub-human as I try to be as respectful as possible. I have tried addressing the officer and adjusting my demeanor in various ways. I have tried the "slave-mentality" demeanor in which I maintain eye-contact long enough to show compliance, I say "yes sir" and "no sir" and tell the officer to "please search whatever you would like, I am in your complete control I do not wish to do anything that would show you that I am threat in any manner." This ended up with me in hand-cuffs on the hood of his vehicle. I tried the "I am an American" approach. Assertive, but not rude. This ended up with me in handcuffs even faster.

- 2. I am afraid to go to certain businesses in Louisiana. At this point, I am used to be followed, but it is the looks that I get from people that are the most disconcerting. I have walked into various establishments, and just been given a look that causes me to be sick to my stomach. This happens on such a regular basis. I dress in slacks and a button up shirt everywhere that I go, but it seems to not help. I even once went to the courthouse with my wife, who is white, to apply for a marriage license and the first person I asked for directions completely disregarded my statement and I asked if I was looking for the probation and parole department.

- 3. I am afraid to call the police in Louisiana. There have been times where I have seen or heard things that would have prompted me to call the police, but I am always hesitant as I made a call before on someone else and I was then made the subject of inquiry.

- 4. I am afraid to be myself in Louisiana. I have my hair cut in a buzz cut. (oh how I have wanted dreads, braids) I wear clothes that are not my style in an effort to assimilate into the culture. I am generally uncomfortable in many public situations. I am stared at whereever I go, suspect in whatever I do, and I really feel that I am invisible to a certain extent but at the same time I feel that people are suspecting of me just because of my race.

I understand that many people could say that I am being paranoid, I understand that completely, but I have tried to be confident and proud and that only results in more scrutiny. Maybe there is nothing that I can do, but if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I didn't think it was this bad here, especially in the south parts. I feel everyone is easy-going and understanding? I've lived in the north too, and I didn't see any of what he was talking about. The black people did see more cautious of what white people were saying/doing around them.

Kid sounds like a sissy, but I'm not one to judge. His socio-economic background probably differs fairly significantly from mine. I had few negative racial experiences growing up in the 1980s and 90s (though I did have a few) but most people were okay.

There are definitely, obviously still racial problems down there, though. You can read enough shite on this board, and it's pretty tightly moderated.

Over half of white Louisianans also voted for a former Grand Wizard of the KKK well within most of our lifetimes. Most of those people are still alive.

That's probably not true. It was only 20 years ago.

Yeah, he was the distinguished gentleman from Loui...oh, wait. Not relevant.

Most of the people who would have voted for him were the older generation , wouldn't you agree?

I'm actually not sure. Quite a few older whites (those who about have been born in the 1930s and before) never left the democratic party. They may have been partial to Edwards. My mother had a good church friend who said she was ashamed for voting for Duke but just couldn't see supporting Edwards. She's in her mid-60s now.

I'm very hesitant to publicly express doubt about this guy's story... Because racism certainly still exists and I've never walked a mile in his shoes. Admittedly this is probably compounded by the fact that I'm white.

However, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't suspect that his account is exaggerated. I wonder what part of Louisiana he's from?

The truth is, black people are far more racist than white people in 2014 America.

Last year, I was assigned to a division of my company where approximately 70% of the employees are black. I was there for 4 months performing an Audit. Let's just say, I could write a book about the racist crap that I heard, as well as how I was treated by many of them.

That's the dirty little secret concerning black racism in America. Most non-blacks don't even begin to know the full extent of it, because they are seldom placed in a situation where black people are in the majority.

Before we keep travelling down this rabbit hole, are we talking about racism in Louisiana, or political affiliation. That isn't much of a gotcha question.

Many people on this board believe racism is a thing of the past. This guy is clearly overdramatic and embellishing. Like most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Link to data proving this "truth?"

Really? Judging by your posts on this board, I have no clue why some black people would't treat you great! You seem like such a pleasure to be around! CLEARLY
MUST BE RACISM!

The vast majority of my coworkers are black. I experience no negative comments or treatment. I treat my coworkers with respect. They have my back and I have theirs. I am in a position of authority but I have been invited to dinner and to party. I don't accept the invites because I don't socialize with my coworkers.

I know that any talk about black racism doesn't fit in with your narrow-minded agenda, medicalgrind, but the truth is the truth. All I heard was them talking about how fond they were of Jeremiah Wright, John Wiley Price (a crooked Dallas politician who plays the race card 24/7), Trayvon Martin this, Trayvon Martin that, "George Zimmerman is the cracks that needs to be dead" etc. And mind you, all of this at a place of business where people are supposed to act in a professional manner.

But why should anybody be surprised by this? Look at how black people are acting in Ferguson right now. Looting and destroying property, and for what purpose? Perhaps instead of attacking me, you should be asking your own people to act responsibly.

As far as this board goes, I make no secret of the FACT that I think both Obama's are full of shite. You might not like to hear that, but sometime the truth hurts.

PS - and, don't worry. Most white people don't even know how black people act when they are in the majority. I do, though.

The poster's username is monroeliving, so maybe the denizens of that fair city could shed light on his opinion.
