I just looked it up, because I wasn't aware of any shenanigans. So apparently they started shipping units with asynchronous NAND, but not before sending synchronous NAND units to reviewers.
That's worse than the AIBs that sell video cards with both Hynix and Elpida memory under the same SKU.

Someone on reddit did a review of each drive that they shipped, and performance was almost exactly the same.
