District officials confirm students with special needs were instructed to sift through trash cans for recyclables and that they’ve been having students with special needs do this for years. They said the money raised from the recycled items funds a larger training plan that teaches students with special needs about managing money, among other life skills.

Seems like a valuable life skill to me.
We had a teacher at my high school who taught the slower kids that weren't down syndrome(or anything super serious like that), just challenged.
He started teaching them how to paint walls, labor skills, etc.
"We've been trying to teach them fractions/algebra for 10 years, they aren't going to get it, they never will, so let's teach them something they can make a decent living doing."
I couldn't agree more.
He did label his classroom "Astrophysics"

They need to learn to get government handouts like the rest of the people that can't work.

We had this program when I was in school too. Why do people think jobs like this are beneath them?
Posted on 8/14/14 at 12:49 pm to Darth_Vader
Solid win for the environment.
....do they get 5 cents a can?

So you all are perfectly fine with having kids digging through the trash can?

Huh? Digging through trash is not vocational training.

Those are practical skills. It sounds like the one in the OP case are skills that are essential for homelessness. Not trying to be a dick.

The big deal is they single out the special needs students to dig through the trash. The rest of the students are not required to do this.
