OP has been updated.

I think this list should be the MTVB's top 5 working directors recommendation list, no?

If you number your list I can add it to the average.

while Haneke just wants to explore tragedy together. He has far more humanity, and his films don't come off as mean spirited.

Like a much better Atom Egoyan really. Much, much better.

But, man. after Amour... I'm just done. I can't watch his movies anymore. It's too emotionally devastating, and just so bleak. He doesn't delight in torturing his characters, but he does it anyway.

Fair point.

I'm a recent convert actually. After watching 2, maybe 3 films some years ago, I really disliked his style. This past year though, I've watched everything he's done and been near-amazed.

Maybe it's now being a little older, maybe it's needing the right mood, but he's an incredible director. This doesn't mean he makes entertaining films, or that everyone will like him, but his skill is among the best and his movies are unique.

Tree of Life is one of the most well directed movies of all time.

1 Coen brothers - Simply the best, and still at the top of their game.
2 David Fincher - A fantastic stylist who has finally learned how to tell stories.
3 Darren Aronofsky - The most audacious filmmaker working within the system
4 David O. Russell - You know what? Learn to tell a fricking story. So many people get awed by technicians and craftsmen, but directors, at their core, need to be storytellers. He's the best at that right now.
5 Christopher Nolan - He made three of the best movies of the past 15 years (Memento, Prestige, Inception). This is his era.

I like this list a lot. These guys along with Anderson, QT, and Scorsese are my favorites.
