I have a couple that I am friends with, that have two steady careers, they are great with my kids, and I think they would be terrific parents. But they have made the decision to not be parents, and they have taken certain medical steps to ensure that will not happen.

They spoil the heck out of their nieces and nephews and the kids of their friends.

I respect that decision and I don't question it. It's their life.

I live in Baton Rouge. Plantation trace is about 3/4 mile south of LSU on highland road on the left. Houses start at 250k there. I have nothing against kids and a main reason I don't want them is I'm to selfish. When you have kids it's all about them in my book. I don't want that. And before you guys say my wife will change her mind, we have been married ten years and she was the one that said its ok if we don't have kids. As she still feels the same way. Mind you this allows us to spoil are nieces and nephews all the time.

Im speaking from exp I really think you have no idea what you're giving up just so you can do what you want.
I pretty much do exactly what I want when I want , but I couldn't imagine things without my two kids.

I too had nieces and nephews before I got married and became a dad.
Doesn't even almost compare... But everybody's different I suppose.

Damn this got derailed. Sorry about that man. Didn't mean to start a riot just thought it would be pertinent to the area. Good luck.

I'm not judging...really not. I'm selfish. I love my time and wish there was more of it. But chilling on a beach, drinking the day away, and loving leisure/vacation time pales in comparison to the excitement of seeing your own do something new every day. It's a hell of a lot of work, so I get it, but man, the idea that you are one of the responsible ones in this world and you're not going to have a child because you would rather not go down that road, makes me a little sad. We have one child, trying to have a second, and I was talking to a stranger at an LSU tailgate last year and asked "so you only have one child?" His response "only because I haven't been lucky enough to have a second".....that pretty much said it all for me. I'm sure you'll do fine buying a house wherever and will make it work. Just fully think about something you won't be able to change in X number of years. You can always change houses.

I agree with you but...

The guy asked for a neighborhood not lecture on having kids or not.

I think Springlake/Hillmont area is nice for young professionals.

My apologies. I must be the first to try to impart some "friendly" (maybe it wasn't to you) wisdom. And honestly, the guy pribably doesn't need advice on what he asked. He has his mind made up and is looking for something else entirely. JMO

No worries, I have a beautiful child and working on another. Can't Imagine life to be as fulfilling without them no matter how much money I have or could have saved without them.

I started a thread on this for you and OP LINK

Don't need lectures. And another thing my wife and I do not drink. If say I'm 50 and I regret it there's adoption. What's funny is if we ever do decide to change our minds we are going to go the adoption route. So many kids out there without a home why not help them?
Thanks for that link. I have it bookmarked now.

Again, this is us. It was my wife's idea not to have kids, but we do have nieces/nephews, friends with kids and it's great fun visiting with them, then going home to a nice quiet house.

Wild cat- I think we made the same decission for similar reasons. I hate you everyone always says we will change our minds and look at us like we are crazy. Society does not like free thinkers and I think they feel its an attack on them for some reason. Simply you wanted kids great, I don't great for me each their own is my belief.

I agree. By the way, I apologize for defending the position in a thread where you didn't even mention what got debated. Sorry about that.

Perfect reason, IMO.

Not everybody wants to be jammed up.

Everybody talks about those stupid "garden homes", but besides being a boon for builders and really old people, nobody wants them.

A friend had a house in Plantation Trace when we were in college. I'd be happy paying 250ish for a house in that area. Very convenient location in regards to LSU, but taking a left out of that neighborhood at certain times of the day was absolute hell.

As an alternative, I'd possibly look at houses off Highland a little past Lee. Traffic seemed to break up a little more and there are comparable neighborhoods. Although I moved from BR 4 years ago and everything's changed, so I could be completely off base.
