So Houston vs Shreveport. I can't really comment on either one of those.

Generally no, as a lot of people do that especially when they're first starting out. (Unless the company is committing to training you a bunch with the expectation that you'll stay with them for a long time.)

Solid job is in Houston (where I'm from), but really good job would be in Shreveport. I'm from BR originally before moving to and eventually growing up (for the most part) in Houston, so I'd be able to be near my family too

Take the job in Shreveport because the cost of living is lower, the pay is higher, and it will presumably lead to increased opportunities and a higher ceiling later on. There's an old saying about Louisiana cities that says: "If you're not having fun in Shreveport, you're not trying very hard. If you're not having fun in Baton Rouge, you're not trying. If you're not having fun in New Orleans, you're dead."

Trust me, no one takes a big job in Shreveport to stay there. That Shreveport job will prove to be a great opportunity to prove yourself before they move you on to bigger and better things in bigger and better cities.

Go Houston, even if this offer isn't as good there will be better ones that open up. Shreveport you will be stuck until you move

I'm assuming the job in Houston isn't terrible, and you can start working on finding a house ect.. If it's where you want to be

That's the kicker...when I spoke with their VP recently, he said it's a 3-6mo "Internship" at their BR location during my last year and then they'd make a business decision to decide to bring me on full time. Salary based on amount worked during my last part-time semester, long-term implications

Those aren't far enough apart after taxes to impact your decision. Go to the city you like, but also consider which company will offer more advancement.

I would choose Shreveport everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Idk when you were in S'port, but it's changed a lot and is getting with the times.

While I take care of paying off student loans, I'll be able to live at my dad's house. He works shift work, so it's like a roommate who cooks supper a few times a week

This, I bet they won't be much difference at all after state income taxes. Texas would be higher in property taxes but I'm assuming you will rent either way for a while reguardless.

So you're paying $8K not to live in Shreveport?

Most would pay double or tripe that.

You just won't get to be a Cowboys fan. (shrugs)
