I was planning my yearly crabbing trip on Elmer's Island

Wanted to crab this weekend on Elmer's Island, but my neighbor told me you can't crab right now on the island. It is prohibited.
I then started a thread about it and had several people say they saw people all up and down the beach crabbing, but then I research this from the LDWF website:
March 28, 2014
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has re-opened the Elmer’s Island refuge to visitors seven days a week. The refuge will be open each day 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
The following activities are strictly prohibited on Elmer’s Island:
• All commercial fishing
• Recreational harvest of shrimp, crabs and oysters
• Camping
• Night-time access
Anyone got actual info on this? Are they telling you not to crab and just not enforcing it?

Seems like you have the actual info.
I wouldn't trust that.
Maybe just go on Grand Isle instead? Crabs are running.

I've been down about every other weekend. I see people crabbing all the time. Including the family fish day weekend when DWF was out there.
Check out the closure map. It does not appear to include the backside, so maybe head up to the cut to Caminda Pass and crab on the backside?

A guy from work went last weekend, no problem. There are signs as you enter the beach that clearly state "no crabbing". Worst case, I would think dwf tells you to pick up your line and dump your catch. I would be pretty surprised if they actually wrote any tickets.
