I see what you are saying, but I also think some people can jump higher and run faster at 18 than at 22. The kids turn into better overall athletes when they are in college, increasing strength and balance, but it doesn't surprise me at all that raw athletic ability peaks in high school for some.

However, I'm not trying to say that high school times are more accurate than NFL combine times.

George Campbell ran a laser timed 4.36 40 yard dash at the Opening in Oregon this year. What would call that?

Malik Jefferson, a 220 lb linebacker ran a 4.39 at the same event what do you call that?

I don't pay any attention. Back when I was in hs one coach clocked us and we would go tell another coach our time. So much dishonesty

when they say a high schooler runs a 4.35, it means he is fast as shite...who cares if it's accurate. a 4.45 is still fast as shite so it doesn't matter to me.

I don't think 40s even matter except wr and db.

Who cares how fast a linebacker goes 40 yards?

Ask the RB trying to get the corner if a LBs burst speed matters or the QB about to be annialated

That's exactly my point. I care about how the big guys accelerate. I don't care about top speed except for db and wr.

Is there a reliable way to measure how quickly a guy gets to top speed?

I doubt a guy that's slow to get up to speed would even be in this discussion.

they do that mph test where they track the entire sprint (40,60 or 100 yards) but it isn't done often

This is just my personal opinion and preference.

At the combine they laser the 10 and 20 yd splits. That's what I think matters for most of the players. Granted, 99 out of 100 times the big guys with great acceleration have the fast 40 times.

a 4.36 and a 4.39 (obviously the fastest times they ran with no avg for high and low) are still 4.4s. thats the biggest issue. as far as high school kids and their exaggerated 40s, a kid runs a 4.59 with his high school coach timing him, with someone to run against. its the only time he'll "run a 4.5" in his life, but he goes around saying he runs a 4.5 when he probably runs a 4.7ish most of the time. if a high school kid runs a legit 4.5 (ie 4.55 - 4.46) on avg, then they usually make everyone else look like theyre playing underwater. and size does slow players down at a certain point (its different for everyone, see justin vincent) whether its muscle or not. tendons start to harden out (and add quickness) at 21+ on most people, but there are always exceptions. some people mature faster than others.

Invent something and retire. I'd buy it.

I know it gets said over and over, but I look to the feet.

Throw some cones out or a ladder and run them through drills.

Mathieu killed it on the drills but didn't burn up the 40.

mathieu and eric reid

i remember reid was a 4.55 guy and mathieu was at 4.57 at LSU hand clock

reid ran a 4.51 at the combine
mathieu was a 4.54

Ill go with the LSU coaches times they have been doing this for a minute

They probably had 20 guys beat mathieus time that year. I'm guessing.

There weren't 20 better players though.

Phillip Livas. Ran a 4.23 and a 4.36 laser timed at Nike camp in high school.

LINK

Then at his pro day and 15-20 lbs heavier he ran a 4.37 and a 4.49.

If you peaked in hs, the Olympic sprints would be dominated by teenagers.

LSU coaches had pp7 at 4.2 don't forget that gem.

I just don't give ultimate weight to 40 times personally. The raiders care, I can promise you that.

Look at hill. If you only see his 40, nothing else, you assume he's a pounder with no speed.

Hah.
