Thomas Sowell often said that if we refer to hiring and being hired as "buying labor" and "selling labor", minimum wage would not be as popular, as people would see it as just another lousy price control.

That's exactly what it is, though. A price control on the COMMODITY of labor.

Yep, what feels sublime at the time costs way more than a dime in 9 months

No vehicle note. Housing and bills usually average around $450-500/month.

To save money, I'll bring a big box of ramen noodles to work and prepare one a day. Amazing savings right there.

Ramen noodles did not exist when I went into my first apt..at age 20. It was one block from the Centenary campus. About 200 square feet. One bedroom and one bathroom. Tiny kitchen. It was essentially a tent made out of wood. It cost me 50 bucks a month. But it was my first place that I could call my own. Freedom from home and then freedom from dorms.

I lived on spaghetti and canned pasta sauce. I got really good at cooking cheap pasta.

Hunger is a good motivator. Glad he sees that it sucks to be on minimum wage and how effective it should be at motivating people to better themselves.

Cheap pasta and PB&J FTW!

Also, Totino's pizza. I miss those days.

I started earning more than min wage when I was in HS...doing hard labor construction in summer time. Then off to college...more hard labor. Iv'e been unemployed twice the last 30 years.. It was not fun...but I got through it...

Why do so many people have children with no education, no skill, and in many cases no spouse they are legally married to and yet "I am struggling to feed my family"

Well Duh!

3 things that will ensure you stay off min wage.

1. stay in school
2. work hard
3. Don't start a family until you are married and have 1 and 2 in control.

You know, I'm sick of the argument that you can't eat healthy on minimum wage.

It doesn't matter if the minimum wage is 20 bucks an hour. Those on it won't be able to live any better because the price of goods will only go up to offset costs of labor. And many people will be replaced by technology

walking or bicycle, occassionally used a payed off car. rent is $420/month

My college internship ended about a month before my post-college job was set to start and my last paycheck was coming in 6 weeks before my first one from my new job. I think I spent a grand total of $200 max in that 6 week span outside of the 2 tanks of gas I bought to drive to my parents' house once and to visit my SO in New Orleans and tour law schools.

Grand total was $720 in a month and a half or $480/month

Minimum wage workers that have meetings "outside the office" are usually to meet their PO for a random. If he'd put down the crack pipe, he wouldn't have to walk three miles in the 90degree heat.

What floors me is that people think a minimum wage salary should be able to support a family.

This. Minimum wage isn't to live on, but to allow people new to the workforce an opurutnity to get work experience and then move on. The problem is that this economy has goten so bad, more and more families are fighting even for minimum wage jobs.
