Not that I remember, and I enjoyed physics.

I don think its common knowledge like some of you think.

If a movie were made today then it may be common enough terminology that it wouldn't have to be explained to the viewer...

The two movies OP references were released in 1996 and 1999. Hardly anyone in the general public would have a clue what an EMP was when the movie came out. Christ its been almost 20 years, movies are allowed to show age I would think

I'm in this camp, I hate how an obviously educated protagonist in a film has to look puzzled while a one scene secondary character explains what an EMP is.

I got no problem with them explaining what it is, it just looks dumb when it is explained to the audience by way of someone telling telling the protagonist.

I want to say that Goldeneye (1995?! Nearly 20 years?! frick I'm getting old) was one of the first movies to prominently highlight EMP, especially from nukes

Probably am wrong....it seems the modern trend started there and you can find a constant stream of movies after it that use it as a plot device.

Wrong decade but right franchise, apparently there is a EMP in pop culture Wikipedia entry that lists View to Kill the first mention of it in 1985.

I thought of Goldeneye as the first as well.

It's really not that common a term. I've only learned what it is through movies- never in school.

It's not hard to know what EMP is but it certainly wasn't covered in any science class I had. Never took physics in high school because I didn't go to a PST HS.

Because I'm not familiar with EMPs? Lol. Never realized that was the bar by which one judges education.

Watching a Fringe episode and they just mentioned an EMP monitoring device without explaining to anyone what an EMP was or how it worked.

I am familiar with the term, "electromagnetic pulse", and I guess I'm familiar with the general concept. However, if someone, without context, mentioned "EMP" to me, I wouldn't necessarily know what they were referring to. It's just not an abbreviation or acronym that I use or hear in everyday life. I bet this is the case for a lot of educated people.
