Was Gravity shooting to win an Oscar?

From how it was packaged, sold, and advertised... Yes

Then they were successful, right? They damn near won it with an hour and a half, mostly CGI movie.

So why throw it out there then?

To show that it was popular among audiences. But you completely missed my point by just focusing on the $$$ it made and ignoring the fact that it won 7 Oscars. By throwing BOTH of those points into my post, I was arguing that the film was critically popular as well as popular with the average joes. Bieber, while popular with the average joes, has never been critically successful.

Ah, he reads the IMDB in order to tell him what is good and isn't

None of those three things I mentioned have anything to do with IMDB. The users on IMDB actually didn't like it as much as the critics (8.0/10 on IMDB as opposed to 9.0/10 on RT).

I said to each his own in my very first post... I thought it was complete shite, as did the people who watched it with me.

Its just a spectacle film with a couple of onion layers of depth.

That's about right. Maybe it was better in the theater but I was completely underwhelmed watching it on DVD. And laughing at it by the end. Just horribly contrived. But pretty in a bright shiny object sort of way.

I thought Gravity was fricking horrible. The script was cringeworthy.

What I liked about this movie was the cinematography and the visual affects. I think in this case, as long as it was not complete garbage, it was a success. The one shot parts looked amazing. People are going to like what they want and if they don't care about a visual masterpiece, they will probably not enjoy this movie. I thought Sandra Bullock was great and Clooney gave a nominal effort for a part written for RDJ. Maybe the best cinematography I've ever seen, but I understand why people don't like it. "To each his own".

I thought it was just okay. The visuals were nice, though.

This movie was a pile of donkey shite and I will never get back the time I wasted watching it.

Scariest movie of the year. I didn't know it was a horror movie going in. I thought it was about space, but once I realized I was going to be trapped in orbit with Bullock and Clooney for 2 hours I was terrified.

Now at least, excluding weirdos in Japan of course. I found that film to be shockingly plausible for where we as a species as a whole are heading. Not coincidentally, this was my second favorite film of last year.

7 Oscars and $720 million worldwide. I'd call that a success.

For full disclosure these were the Oscars it won: Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing

Minus best director lots of technical awards which it deserved and he won that award for the visuals as well. It was a beautiful film and I enjoyed it for the most part. I did shake my head during the fire extinguisher/jet pack scene though. And I will say it is a film I really have no desire to ever watch again

No one is saying it won awards for its screenplay or acting. Despite most of its awards being in the technical categories (awards it fully deserved), it also won Best Director - the second biggest prize of the night - and also won the most awards of any film from 2013.

Should it have won Best Picture based on my criteria? Yes. Should it have won Best Picture based on the historic criteria of the Oscars? No.

I saw it on the small screen. Great special effects and was beautifully shot. The story was okay. I snickered at corny symbolism.

Bottom line...I was bored. Didn't care about the characters or the story...besides the boredom it seemed very unrealistic. Cinematography doesn't impress me when it's all computer generated...very little redeeming value.

Terrible. Star Trek is more realistic.
