I was actually thinking about this the other day when I was listening to the Jaguar Journal and they used Southern's band as the intro. They always sound scratchy and the drums sound out of sync.
It seems like all the SWAC schools just blow as hard as they can without any concern for how it sounds. Is that what it is supposed to sound like?

USC on any top 10 list is LAUGHABLE. The only reason they're semi popular is because they're in Hollywood so they're used for movies a bunch. They're pretty terrible and bland.

Band geeks know this, but not the general public.
Also, there is no question that Ohio State actually was The Best Damn Band in the Land last year based on the shows they did. (LSU used to do shows like that, however...)
I've always had a soft spot for the Texas A&M band. The flashback drills and marching 6 to 5 is awesome.

Southern is nationally regarded as the best band in the nation. To say its because of stereotypes is foolish. It's why they're ranks number 1 in the nation year and year out. The bump music from the jaguar journal is double recorded from a laptop from YouTube videos. Those recording doesn't do it justice at all.

To my ears it sounds it sounds out of sync. Tubas and drums just jumping in at random time, which is why I don't think there band sounds good at all. It throws off what little harmony is there. They are top band for their "performance" and not the music IMO.

Southern and all HBCU bands sound like absolute shite.
