Is it b/c they go up higher or is it maybe that the edges of the shoe are more rounded or is just a gimmick ?

They do for the most part. Because they are high tops and have more ankle support. Tennis shoes are the same way and those really do help a lot.

High tops don't prevent them but they do help!

I will tell you that high top work boots do protect from twisting your ankles.

Yes they do help. They are built to handle lateral movements.

It's not a gimmick.

The trend seems to be going to the lower cut style like Kobe. I know the Pistons' trainer was complaining a few years ago that all of the flywire superlight technology, especially in Nikes, was removing stability and leading to foot/leg injuries.

My logging boots have saved me many times. I couldn't roll my ankle if I tried. They are 11" IIRC

Yes, it also helps with lateral movement significantly.

Too many times I've seen guys get injured wearing running shoes on the court
