I've long believed that folks in D.C. pay taxes like everybody else. They contribute to the overall well-being of the country like everybody else. They should be represented like everybody else," Obama added.

Last year, the White House installed the District's "taxation without representation" license plates onto the presidential motorcade vehicles.
At the time, the administration released a statement saying Obama had seen “first-hand how patently unfair it is for working families in D.C. to work hard, raise children and pay taxes, without having a vote in Congress.”
“Attaching these plates to the presidential vehicles demonstrates the President’s commitment to the principle of full representation for the people of the District of Columbia and his willingness to fight for voting rights, Home Rule and budget autonomy for the District,” the statement said.

Making DC a state defeats the entire purpose of DC.
Maybe they can make it a state, set aside some other non-state federal territory for a capital, not allow people to live there permanently, and this time MEAN IT!

If DC becomes a state, then every single dc worker that lives in Northern Virginia should vote in the state of DC.

They'll vote in both because DC will "conveniently" forget to provide the rolls to the VA Secretary of State to purge people voting in both states.

Getting closer to 57 states....Hmmm....

I'm going to get slammed for saying this, but I still think it is fricked up that northern Virginians who spend their entire day in DC as federal workers get to vote in Virginia. That's 13 electoral votes gone because of a few hundred thousand government goons.

I was under the impression DC gets more money per capita than any other district in the country.
So stop bitching DCers or move.

Kinda makes sense. Those living in DC are under-represented. I'm sure if they were Republican leaning then you all would be all for it.
They really just need to give them the same level of representation that everyone else has in congress.

I wish I had so many more upvotes to give to this.

All of the residential area should be annexed into Maryland or maybe a little into Virginia. Look at a map on Google. It makes sense. In no way should we give Harry Reid and Obama 2 more Socialist Senators.

I kige this. Most of the city doesn't even need to be part of the federal district.

DC a state? Uber rich white people problems. Plus he knows it would be solid blue and more EVs.

Yes, he's angling for the 57 states he mentioned. Make DC a state, break up California into 6 states and make Puerto Rico a state. Then he would be correct in saying 57 states.

I thought DC already had votes in the electoral college. They just don't have representation in congress.
