That's what it is Heady. Being at the show is what makes the impact.
I was never able to see Grateful Dead but there is no denying that they were better at what they did than anyone else. Dead's legacy will extend much further than any other jam band in history and that is because they were the best.

Phish is great. Arguably one of the best live acts still touring. But if we are talking of all time, Phish can't touch the Dead

It is something that is hard to envision today. Mid early '80's, there were very few if any on lookers. Cops didn't give a damn. We swept the sidewalks when we left. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show.

The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia in particular, certainly had some mystique about them that is intangible. The scale of their dedicated following is truly unlike anything else in music and even transcends music as a cultural phenomenon.

From a pure musical aspect though, I go with the Phish. And it is very close Something like the 12.6.97 Tweezer just does a whole lot more for me than a '71 Dark Star. Anyway this could go on forever so I am just going to stop now.

Robert Hunter is one of the finest American songwriters ever. A finer songwriter than Jerry or Trey are guitarists. It's a huge part of The Grateful Dead equation.

Definitely a huge part, but more as a lyricist.

This is really getting off track.

The OP was claiming WSP is better than Phish because they play more unique songs. Beyond disagreeing with it, I don't even know if it is true. Phish has 118 different songs played in 13 shows this year. What does WSP have?

The jerry/hunter song writing team is actually hugely under rated imo because of the deads following. They wrote timeless songs which are taken for granted because of the whole hippie drug scene thing.

I of course realize that in the Deadhead community, there’s perhaps no greater polarizing topic than discussing one’s love for some prog-nerds from Vermont. But let’s get down to the brass tacks – in terms of improvisational live experiences that are centered on communal psychedelic expansion, there’s no other bands on the plate. If you want to mention any bands that involve hula-hoops, Southern rock, or shitty live techno, then you can probably stop reading this blog right now and call me a formulaic dick-wad in the comments section

Just made it to Terrapin. What a masterpiece. Love the lyrics and overall progression.

Hunter is more of a lyricist, not a songwriter. That other half of the equation is huge.

But yea, he's great.

I forgot the exact quote but someone said "If Grateful Dead's live shows are a bumpy ride down a back country road, then Phish is a rocket ship into outer space." Something like that

Granted that quote was like in the mid 90's when Phish shows were like...good

I wouldn't even go that far. The Dead, Phish and Panic are my 3 favorite bands by a large margin and I think they are all exceptional at what they do. Comparing them is stupid because they don't try to do the same things. I certainly realize that Panic and Phish likely wouldn't be what they are without the influence of the Dead which should be accounted for. But I also don't think either should be dismissed because of the time period.

/end rant

I've seen a lot of wsp and phish. I've seen a whole lot of GD and JGB. I've only been brought to tears by the latter. More inflection.

They're all damn good at what they do.
