I have listened to 7-8 shows in July, and this is one thing that has stuck out to me. They definitely take more chances and try to provide good, quality, unique jams every night. Yes some are better than others, but they are the standard for improving. However, they seem to play many of the same songs over and over (I realize I haven't heard many shows). I give Phish the edge on "jams", but WSP has an array of different songs. They continually bring back songs from way back and hardly ever play the same songs (except for a few regulars).

My question is, does more unique jamming trump a wider song range?

*Disclaimer* I'm 2 bottles of wine in.

I've always said that Panic writes better songs than Phish. Live, though, Phish travels a hell of a lot further. The actual songs are just platforms to get to the jams and anchors for them.

I don't really listen to jam bands anymore, but that's my take from my 40+ Phish shows in the. 90s.

That's pretty much my thoughts. I prefer panic because I grew up listening to them, but both bands have their strengths.

That being said, if I can choose a show on NYE it would be Panic everytime.

Both are in my "favorite" bands group, each for their own reasons. It is possible.

Ive literally only fallen asleep at 2 shows in my life, both were wsp shows.

I havent seen phish in 15 years, so im not taking sides here. If im gonna listen to an improve band, i prefer to listen to mmw or some jazz these days.

Well I don't understand that since (to me) Phish is a more chill, sit back and listen band while WSP is a get up and dance band. If that makes any sense.

I am amused by:

1."but WSP has an array of different songs. They continually bring back songs from way back and hardly ever play the same songs (except for a few regulars)" as an argument. Take a look at Grateful Dead 1977 setlists (generally regarded as a pinnacle for jam bands) and you will find a plethora of Sugarees, Scarlet>Fires, Estimated Prophets, Samson & Delilahs, St. Stephens, Wharf Rats,etc... Not much variation at all, yet still a phenomenal year and easily a contender for best tour of all time in Spring '77.

2. Using songwriting in a jam band discussion is funny. Using WSP as a standard is hilarious. Ribs and whiskey'd.

3. There is a lot to say when a band's longest song show in and show out is a drum solo.

I'm not talking songwriting (I haven't heard enough Phish), but just song number overall.

I'm not making them a standard, just saying they do a great job of mixing it up.

TGD is TGD... I'm not trying to compare them OR Phish to them.

I guess wsp never made me want to get up dance.

Phish in 97 on the other hand...

I find wsp's jamming style to be boring, and ive seen them with houser and without.

I had a buddy go to uga in the mid 90s and of course he came back raving about wsp, and i just never got it and i tried multiple times.

Different strokes for different folks.

And that still doesn't answer the question.

Does a band that doesn't play the same songs over a 6-7 show period make up for the constant "noodling" (which is bullshite) jimmy does?

Drums is drums... It may be the longest song, but how many times have y'all bitched because Trey has gone too far?

What gives?
