Let's talk about this. In my mind, it's a joke. He wasn't top 5 at this WC.

He was 3rd in goals and created the most chances out of anybody in the tournament.

He probably shouldn't have won the Golden Ball, but he was definitely top 5.

James Rodriguez should have won.

This is what happens when the majority of your voters are coaches, players, and journalists from football hotbeds like South Asia and Africa.

Basically every federation gets three votes, regardless of its football pedigree, let alone knowledge.

It was pathetic.

The guy had 0 goals and 1 assist in elimination play. It should have gone to either Rodriguez or Neuer (if there isn't a rule about a player being unable to win both the Golden Ball and the Golden Gloves.

Robben, Rodriguez, Muller (arguably), Zabaleta, and Neuer were better than Messi. You could probably include more than that.

Not sure I agree, but I'm not sure who I would have voted for.

Does anybody know when the votes are counted? Does the final factor in at all?

I'm okay with Messi winning it if just to piss of the Ronaldo fans.

I like Messi a lot and I am fine with him winning it; however, I did not expect him to win it and I am pretty surprised he did.

James or Mueller to me, but to say Messi wasn't top 5 is crazy.

If Messi had scored the goal to win the WC nobody would question him winning the Golden Ball. Can't discredit him bc they lost today.

He had a great tournament even though Argentina scuffled offensively in the knockout stages.

Robben and Ha-mes were the only other options IMO.

James was a treat to watch but I don't think he can really be considered a legitimate option, either.

I would've voted for Tommy Fussball, then Hummus Rodriguez.

He scored more goals than anyone in the tournament.

Rodriquez scored the most goals in the tournament and scored in every game he played in. He helped carry a team missing 4 starters and their star player to the QF.

He scored arguably the goal of the WC, and scored 6 from 9 shots total. Total. That is ridiculous.

I would be ok with J-Rod getting the Golden Ball over Messi, but to say Messi wasn't top 5 in this tourney is just wrong.

When is the last time someone one the golden ball for lighting it up in the early games?

Although that has a lot to do with Messi winning.

Right, but when was the last time someone other than Cannavaro got the golden ball for scoring 0 goals in elimination play?

Btw, Muller and Robben were voted second and third best.

ETA: Apparently Zidane beat Cannavaro for the Golden Ball in 2006.
