I would have drove to the police station or to a public place or something.

This. It's best to avoid a situation entirely. No reason to act a badass and end up ruining your life and/or someone else's. The two times I brandished mine, there was no avoiding and they were the aggressors. The last one was in north Arkansas. My wife and a quite attractive friend of hers had to make an emergency restroom stop. Place looked OK, but there were quit a few Mexicans hanging out. They started eyeballing the girls and not in a good way. Several then positioned themselves around my truck and were talking and signaling each other as the girls were about to come out. There were 8 all together. And two were staring me down. Until I put the laser on my glock between one of their eyes. My wife saw from inside and pulled hers. Apparently, they understand Glock and Kahr if not English, cause they got the frick out in a hasty manner. I have no doubt SOMETHING was about to happen.

1. Brandishing (called "illegal carry" in Louisiana statutes) is illegal. Drawing a handgun in self defense isn't brandishing.

2. As was said, driving to your home after a confrontation isn't wise. Drive to a police station.

3. ALWAYS phone in a threat to the cops -- unless you're the one who did something stupid to instigate it. The failure to phone in the incident makes me doubt the story told by the OP's buddy.

4. In Louisiana you're allowed to use deadly force when "in reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm." Having someone follow you doesn't necessarily rise to this level. Nor does someone yelling at you from a car.

If you shoot someone under the circumstances described, you better be able to do a good job of convincing the DA and/or a jury that the threat was sufficient to meet the legal threshold. Just being "scared" isn't how the law is worded.

5.HOWEVER, if someone tries to force their way into your car while you're in the vehicle, or illegally enter your home while you're in it, you'd be on firmer ground. But even then your use of deadly force has to be "reasonable."

I guarantee that those kids could have pulled out a gun and blasted his arse away as soon as your friend pointed a gun at him.
If someone points runs up to my car and points a gun at me, guess what I'm going to do.
