Show me where I said Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are the most popular superheroes in the world and I'll give it to you.

No. It really isn't. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are the most recognizable comic book superheroes in the world. To have them come together for the first time in a live action Hollywood film is indeed history.

Are you a fan of Osama Bin Laden? Did you ever buy any of his writings or bother to listen to what he had to say? How about Hitler? Did you ever read Mein Kempf from cover to cover? I'm going to assume your answer is no. These guys are obviously not your favorites. You don't really care too much about them and you probably couldn't give a shite less what they have to say. But when you see them on TV, do you or do you not recognize them instantly?

i think i have it

they are making the "if you see her costume, you know who it is" argument. i'd wager both posters are older than us, and their mind is biased b/c when they were of "comic book" age, there weren't options. hell that's why half of DC is still around (past glory due to limited options)

they fail to understand how much society has changed, namely proliferation of information. kids today are exposed to SO MUCH more information, and their brains are so much more advanced than even those of my generation

kids will recognize dozens, if not hundreds of [insert character] costume, if presented with that stimuli

this "top 5 recognizable" argument really only matters if there are 10 things to discuss (like in the past). when there are 1,000, there is no "top 5" of that argument. it won't matter until you get to 1001

therefore, the term itself is bullshite

Ok, so people look at Wonder Woman and they know the name "Wonder Woman." How is this important? What does this all mean?

Do they know ANYTHING about the character of Wonder Woman? Why she exists? Who she is? What she can do? Tell me.

I could link you numerous lists that have her among the Top 5/6 greatest superheroes but you won't care. So why bother?

i won't care b/c that isn't what is being discussed

quote:

But not as many as recognize Wonder Woman.

how do you know this?

and with how unpopular she is, i'd imagine she's trailing due to falling out of the social consciousness

kids today are growing up without really even knowing she exists. she'll be "that lady" after this movie drops

My wife is probably the best judge for this. She doesn't know who the frick Jean Gray, Rouge, or Mystique are. The only reason she knows who Black Widow is, is because of Scarlett Johansson. She knows who Wonder Woman is without question. As far as women superheroes she's probably only second to Catwoman.

Has to be. This is the only reason it makes sense. But I then fail to see how:

quote:

History was made today

Is even in the vicinity of reality. So the entire thing falls apart again.

I'm 27 and I never picked up a Wonder Woman comic. I never watched an episode of the 1970s television show. I never watched a single animated cartoon with her in it. And yet before the influx of Marvel movies I knew who she was and had not a clue that Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, etc. even existed.

But does she actually know WHO Wonder Woman is? What is her real name? What she can do? What are her motivations?

You're a geek like the rest of us right? So she might get this info through osmosis.

Webster defines the word recognizable as: "able to be recognized or identified from previous encounters or knowledge."

well people always over-value the past and past experiences. this is an example of people "holding on" and refusing to admit that things had progressed and new ideas/commodities have taken over

that's why i've made so many "old people" jabs, but it's true. dead people and those with alzheimer's won't recognize WW

Hawkeye I can believe. But Thor and Iron Man? Come on.

Great. So how do we get from:

able to be recognized

to

I don't know. Do they know where Hitler was born, who his parents were, or why he did the things he did?

It doesn't matter. My argument is about recognition. They see Wonder Woman in her costume and they automatically know that's Wonder Woman.
