Sammy Martin was one of the fastest Tigers ever. Go to the 2:12 mark.

The fastest white man alive!
That's what my fellow students and I called him back in the day. Fun as hell to watch the defense underestimate his speed .

Ask Texas A&M and then Mickey Joseph.

he bulked up to maybe 175-178lbs by his Senior season.
I doubt it. If he ever saw a 7 in his weight it was 167.

Thought it was Guidry who threw the pass to Sammie vs A&M (just going off memory).

AlwaysaTgr. I thought it was Hodson, But you may be right. May have been Guidry when he came in for his first half series. Rather Hodson or Guidry, and I can concur that I don't have the best memory but I can still see Martin cutting that slant and thinking if the QB gets the ball to him, he's off to the races. AlwaysaTgr, you are definitely right. I just went to the youtube clip That Ponchy Tiger posted and it was definitely Guidry. Wow, watching that part of the video still gave on old fart like me Goosebumps.

Met him at LSU football camp summer of 88. He wasn't big but he was quick. A great LSU Tiger.

He had an incredible run against Ole Miss in Jackson one night. He scored a touchdown from about nine yards out, but there's no telling how many yards he actually covered with all the back & forth, starts & stops.
One of the most exciting short-yardage runs I ever saw, and my favorite Sammy Martin highlight.
It's toward the end of this package, but the whole thing is short, and worth watching.
LSU vs Ole Miss 1987

And of course, the running back he is compared to .... is the only other white guy at RB since the 1960s.
Hokie Gajan says, "What's up?".

Nickname after the TA&M game was "White Lightnin'"

He was the white version of RS10. Skinny, fast and great with the ball in his hands. The problem with both of them, was where did you put them in order to get them the ball? At RB, they couldn't be expected to pound it up the middle and as WR they couldn't be expected to consistently beat man to man coverage. Either way, defenses could narrow in on what they could do, thus limiting what they had to guard against. In the end, both were great athletes and certainly have some great highlights, but neither were set to be superstars ready to be every down players that the offense could be based on.

He was fantastic. Played much tougher than his size. Had great speed, moves and could catch the ball also. One of my favorite all time Tigers.

he looked like he was about 51 years old at LSu lol
fast though

I remember that ole miss run that someone mentioned earlier - that one really stands out in my mind.

Arnsparger did a great job designing an offense that was ahead of its time in college ball. Defenses didn't know where LSU was coming from. The pass against A&M, for example, was about a two yard dump over the blitzing LBs iirc.

Sammy was fun to watch...outstanding speed and tough...and terribly undersized. '80's Tiger football was fun. We we're loaded. If Arrnsparger had given us a few more years, I always thought we might could have avoided the '90's.

Craig Rathjen (got gurt but solid FB/RB 1983-86)

Dude did straigt up look like he was 40 years old. I'm old, so I remember him. That said, I remember him more as a slot type guy/wingback equivalent than I do a running back. Likely has to do with seeing that A and M highlight so many times. I need to read this whole thread and see what others remember of him as a pure running back.

Yes.

we really weren't that strong at the rb position in the 80s
We were damn strong.

t's just weird to see a skinny white kid playing running back like that
White people let their kids play football back then.

Was he like the Jacob Hester of his time?
They both had good hands. Other than that they were about as opposite as 2 RBs can be.
