I quit cold turkey many years ago, but I'll still nip a corner every now and then when I'm stressed. I hate that I bit them for such a long time that my nail bed is permanently shorter than most people's. It doesn't extend all the way to the end of the finger. So I have to keep my nails clipped pretty short. If they get too long, the white part looks stupid and I get the urge to bite them.

What the hell causes someone to bite their nails? I wish I knew why I started, I just know that when I'm nervous, that's where I go. Stupid psyche.

I'm too far gone to quit. I am just going to have to monitor my son and make sure he doesn't see me doing it so he doesn't develop this habit.

Oh, and I've bitten his nails too, when I was too scared to use the clippers on him.

I'm not proud.

I used to have a terrible nail biting habit. I would use the edge of my teeth to peel my nail back to the cuticle. I literally never had a nail on my ring finger.

Unfortunately my nail bed is also destroyed and my nails get white way before the tips of my fingers.

It's been 5 years since I stopped biting my fingernails

Congratulations on quitting. For me it was tougher to quit biting my nails than it was to quit smoking.

This is why I posted this thread.

I can make it a few days when I try not to bite them, but if I slip into a daydream at some point I end up gnawing them down to nothing. It's a terrible subconscious habit.

Im the same way, its just habitual at this point.

Go old school and put a rubberband on your wrist. Pop yourself HARD every time you do it.

I haven't bitten them since I was young, but I do know I tend to peel at them. Since there's rough parts, I try to pick at it to smooth it out, bad subconscious indeed (its never grossly disfigured, etc. - just end up picking them to be short and uneven)
