Not sure if it is a disease or not, but why is the prerequisite for something being a disease or not wether you had a choice? If you get cancer from smoking is that not your choice? You your cancer not be a disease? Say you get AIDS by knowingly sleeping with someone who is infected would you not have a disease? Your arguments are very flawed.

Exactly. If someone willingly contracted HIV, would it not be a disease?

List of stupid things that RandySavage has ever heard:
Water is wet.
The sky is blue.
The sun sets in the West.
Addiction is a disease.

Lots of mob mentality in this thread.

This is absurd and makes people with addictions sound even more like they're in denial. Calling it a disease almost seems like trying to make addiction sound more fricking PC.

What in the hell are you talking about? The disease is the byproduct from smoking. Cancer is the disease you are susceptible to if you choose to smoke. Cancer will not go away when you finally put the cigs down. AIDS will not go away when you finally quit having sex with HIV infected partners. Quit drinking, and what happens? It sure as frick isnt a miracle. Voila, alcoholism is gone.

If you want to call it a disease you have to at least acknowledge it's one you give yourself, making it significantly different from other real forms of disease.

No, it doesn't. It makes it a mental DISORDER. I don't consider anxiety to be a disease
Both are diseases. Anxiety being a mental disorder. Addiction being a disease and mental disorder. There is a reason a person sitting on their couch can have the same release of chemicals and cascade of symptoms as a person being chased by an axe murder. It's anxiety disorder.
There is a reason I can go watch an NFL Sunday and have 4-5 beers over the course of 2 games and leave and go about my day/nap. An addict will roll back home the next morning. Or 2-3 days later after hookers and blow.
Being a tool is not a disease. Irvin and carter can both stand accused of tool ness at times.

I liked what Carter said about getting help but also taking personal responsibility and wanting to get help. He also spoke from his personal experience about his wake up call was when he got cut from the Eagles and Buddy Ryan said he couldn't trust him. He thinks the Browns should cut Gordon and Gordon needs to get help. I get it.
As far as the deal with Irvin didn't hear that interview. I'd be curious of Carter's response to that.

Well, your example has a major flaw in it from the get-go. No one is claiming smoking is a disease (the elective activity that produced the lung cancer), but the tumors that result from it certainly are.
You are claiming the elective activity itself (drinking) is a disease.
Now, if you claim the cirrhosis of the liver resulting from chronic drinking is a disease, we would all agree with you.

Carter was specifically asked for his opinion based on his experiences & he answered accordingly. Irvin is knocking Carter based on his, Irvin's, experiences. I like Chris for the fact that he pulls no punches when discussing his very personal problems. He admits to being a POS back in those days but has quite obviously made changes in life/style that have made him a lot better man & a HOF football player. Irvin, whenever I see him, I get the impression he's got an agenda behind everything he's saying, primarily self promotion related.

Irvin calls it a disease, I am gonna call it a disease.

Choosing to smoke isn't the disease, the tumor it creates is. Choosing to drink isn't the disease, the physical and very real changes in the brain it creates is...and it doesn't go away after alcoholics/addicts stop.
