Most interesting part of this article imo was Darwin's direct experience with the torture regime known as slavery. Everyone who worries about how "far from liberty" our country has become should reflect on the fact that most of 19th century America was a slave empire founded on torture and terror.

Virtually every american and Briton in the 19th century professedto be a christian so both pro and anti slavery ffacions were led by christians who used scripture to justify their positions. RL Dabne was consideredone of the foremost theologians of that era, who is still revered by some conservative Christians. By modern standards, he was a vicious racist who used the bible to justify slavery and the inferiority of non whites.
