re: Thinking about my first Yak

It's not as easy as I thought it would be, but I don't think I'd enjoy any other yak if I couldn't have the stability, storage, hands free aspect. I had to get rid of my boat for a bit and wanted to the most comfortable experience on the water you can get with a yak. I think I got that. I don't mind throwing it on a utility trailer and dragging the extra weight if it means I can keep fishing comfortably. I wouldn't want it if I had to lug it up to an apartment or anything like that. I will be saving up for a dream boat for my next purchase though. This kayak business doesn't replace my desire for a real boat as it does for some people.

Im looking at a Perception Pescador Sport 12'. Im 6'0" 219 lbs. Should I go larger with an entry level kayak? I know absolutely nothing about it but have been interested in kayak fishing for awhile. I was recommended this one by a friend.

Coming from a guy who's starter yak was the Perception Pecador 12 from Academy, I'd get an FS12T from Bass Pro as a first yak.
ETA: Nothing wrong with the Pescador. It's just not the ideal fishing vessel.
This is the decision Im trying to make. Any more info would be appreciated as to why you prefered the FS12T. Any specific details? Just felt more comfortable overall?

You'll have more room for gear in the Ascend. The Pescador is pretty limiting in that regard.

Different wants and needs. If I got to trailer it I'm just gonna use a boat. The thing I like about kayak fishing is it opens up areas where I wouldn't fish with a boat. I can pull over on side the road, grab my yak off the top of the jeep, walk through a little bit of marsh grass, and throw it in a pond. I also keep it simple when I'm in my yak. No need to bring tons of gear IMO. I love the simplicity of it.

Aw man I much rather kayak fish now that I started. And so much simpler
But I still obviously would never turn down a boat trip. Each their own

I'll start by saying I have never paddled the FS12T. I have seen other people in them though. All I meant was that if I could go back and do it again, knowing what I know now, I would've chosen the FS12T over the Pescador. Mainly because of the lack of mobility you have in the Pescador. It has very limited space for gear, the seat will leave your butt numb after sitting in it for a few hours, and it's pretty much impossible to reach the front storage compartment while you're on the water making it pretty much useless. It does have it's pro's. It's effortless to paddle and super fast, it's fairly stable (but don't try to stand in it, you will tip), and it's affordable.
All of that being said, I did some pretty good fishing out of it. It served me well. Even though I bought a new yak, I won't sell it because it will still get used.

Again... Rent first and try out a bunch of different 's to see if you really want to get into this hobby.

I could go anywhere in my old boat. I could pole in 6" of water and use the trolling motor in shallower water than the mirage drive works (I've fished the same places in my boat and kayak). So I miss my boat bad right now. I do really like taking out the kayak, but I don't find myself having the itch to get out there as much as when I had the boat. I think I'll start to like it even more once I let go of all the crap I feel like I need to bring . I need to simplify it a bit.

Problem with that is for the most part on these cheaper, entry level kayaks places like Academy/BassPro/West Marine don't offer demos or rentals. From what I've seen most of the places that just do rentals seem to only rent out the brands they sell, so again someone looking for something entry level/cheap is SOL. So for the most part you almost have to take word of mouth, read reviews and hope you end up with something that'll fit your needs as a beginner.

Hell, if you want to try out a pescador, we can go fishing one day and you can try it all you want.

FS12T looks nice..for me i dont have a pickup so i would have to throw it on top of one of my SUVs..what would be the best way tie down method for transport? not trying to spend much here as i'm working with a budget of under $700

I put a couple pool noodles on my crossbars and just strap the yak down on them. Works great.

I'm about as much of a budget minded cheapskate as you'll find. If you do decide on buying the FS12T new you can do like I did. I found a place online(CardPool I think) that sold unused gift cards at a discount. I bought $650 worth of Basspro cards for 13% off their value. So you pretty much end up getting a decent padddle for free.

I may be reading that wrong...........but you bought $650 worth of gift cards for $84.50?
Posted on 7/2/14 at 5:49 pm to CBLSU316
I had to go back and reread to make sure I didn't screw up, it's 13% OFF their value...so I got $650 for $565.50.
