I know I'm late to this convo, but Lederman follows like the entire USMNT on Twitter and just the Barca guys and Casillas on the Spanish NT.

Zelalem.....
If you aren't familiar with him, google his name.
He just turned 17 in January. A week later, he made his 1st appearance for Arsenal's top squad in an FA Cup game. Then he signed his 1st pro contract.
At 16 he was playing for Arsenals U21 team with the likes of Ox and Walcott... And he was already 1 of their top players. He also dressed for Arsenal at 16 and was available as a substitute, but was not used.
He went from playing high school soccer to dressing out for Arsenals top team in 7 months... At 16years old.
People have said "he can dribble like Iniesta and pass like Xavi." And "If Zelalem is half the player many predict he will be, Wenger is a very lucky man. Special players as good as Zelalem come around only a few times in a generation. " He's also compared to Zidane a good bit.
Arsenal has said he's their most promising player since Cesc Fabregas, and is ahead of him at this age. Jack Wilshere has said training against him is a nightmare. He was playing in a trial and after a few minutes of play Wenger told Geds dad that "your son will play for Arsenal." And that was it.
This (that passing... 0:22 mark is a world class pass for anyone.... Wow. All at 16)

Unless he has Ronaldo's skill and messi's finishing touch this is an unfair comparison.
Watching those videos though he would be a huge upgrade for the US at CM if e continues to progress. His decisiveness on those passes is what's missing for the USMNT.

His touch, calmness, technique, vision to pick out a pass and then the ability to make that pass is out of this world. And at such a young age. Kid is going to be great.
And I'm not making that comparison to Zidane. Thats just who he gets compared to / the kind of talent he is / what he can be like if he progresses as he should.

Oh I know you weren't comparing him zidane and that other people are doing it. I was just saying that's an unfair comparison because zidane was the best to ever play IMO. Putting that type of hype on anyone is unfair.

Agreed... But that's the type of talent he has at this age.

No doubt. I just hope he chooses to play for he US And that he stays at Arsenal because he would be nasty in that system.

I wonder if the comparison to Cesc is really apt. They don't seem all that similar, but I probably seen enough of either player to validate a comparison. That said, wasn't Cesc getting decent first team minutes by age 17?

What's the latest on Zelalem and the US?
Posted on 7/2/14 at 3:15 pm to cwil177
Cesc made his 1st appearance for Arsenal on his 17th birthday. Same as Gedion. And I'm not sure they compare him to Cesc.... They just say that he's the most promising player to go through the Arsenal ranks since Cesc.

If his dad has obtained citizenship then he automatically gets it. It's been rumored (key word: rumor) that he already has his citizenship and is waiting until after the WC to pledge his future to the US.

Once his Dad becomes a US citizen, Gideon will be 1 as well due to him being a minor at just 17 and the Child Citizenship Act of 2000 . He and his Dad were in DC in May so his father could become a citizen and due to that act he would automatically become a US citizen. Supposedly they are already approved and its going through the final stages of the process and they are just waiting to get their passports and certificates.
And he declined to play for Germany U17 in the Euros which was huge. He wouldn't have been able to switch to the US because he played at that level while not being a US citizen. You can only switch to countries that you are a citizen of.
And best of all, Gedion considers himself to be an American because he grew up in America. Sounds American and acts American. And supposedly he felt like an outsider with the German youth teams. And he knows a lot of the young American guys coming up due to playing here when he was growing up.

Really keeping my fingers crossed for Fagundez. Anyone with more knowledge know if he'd favor us over Uruguay?
i know he's working on getting his US citizenship, and it may come down to how quickly hes able to get it.
from some interviews and his MLS/NBC doc episode, kid seems like hed prefer to play for the states, but i doubt hed wait another 3 or so years to get everything legal.

Although I hope if he plays for us, we find someone who can finish those great through balls. The only thing more frustrating that not creating chances, is creating chances and not finishing them.
Hope we get him.

I thought I saw a while back that he already had his US citizenship.

Yea last year when I first heard of him I watched every video and read every article about him
And we have a young player that can finish in front of the net... he scored vs Belgium... 19 year old Julian Green. Just pair up Zelalem and Julian and watch the magic happen.
Plus, the way Zelalem passes the ball and sets his teammates up so perfectly its hard not to finish most of his passes

Can you imagine in a few years ZG playing AM, Green on the left, Bacon and Jozy up top, maybe Yedlin/Johnson on the right?
My phone keeps wanting to autocorrect Yedlin to heroin.
