but are they a ws contending team this year is the question
well that was one of two questions you asked. i addressed the one that was silly.
but of course they're a WS contending team. they were last year too.

Do they win the west and are they a ws contending team?
No guarantee they win the west and they may just be a great regular season team

They always seem to have issues in the playoffs though
His name the past 2 years is Justin Verlander

They also have the best record in MLB... Yet many casual (even hardcore MLB) fans can't name 6 players on the team....

Yes and yes.
You gave some good numbers; they are first in MLB in runs (COL is 5 behind then a huge drop off), 2 runs away from being first in runs given up (trailing SEA), and as you'd guess based on that, 1st in run differential. But look at the run differential numbers:
1) OAK, +135
2) LAD, +54
They are 81 ahead of 2nd place. That is basically the same difference as the Dodgers and the Twins (83 difference), who are 21st in MLB in run differential.

Great regular season teams are great teams. Baseball playoffs have more variation than most sports.

Of course they are legit. They have easily been the best team in baseball so far this year.
Baseball playoffs are such a crapshoot that any team that makes the playoffs is a WS contending team, so yes they are a WS contending team.

Came close to betting A's under 88.5 wins in the spring, but luckily I was too cheap to pay the juice at -145 by the time I was looking at it. Of course, this was right when the AJ Griffin and Jarrod Parker injuries hit the pitching staff.
Who knew coming into the season that a staff counting on Scott Kazmir as their #2 starter could be this good?

Legit and a contender but their problems in the playoffs has been they don't hit stud pitching. They haven't touched Verlander for two years now.

I really want Billy Beane to get a World Series ring. The stars may be aligning for them this year.

They may actually win a playoff series this time.

I picked the A's vs Dodgers in the WS the last two years. Maybe I'll be right this time.

A good time to find out would be tonight on ESPN. They play at Detroit who leads the Central and are 10 games over .500. The A's are 21 games over .500 with the best record in Baseball, yet ESPN is showing the Rays with the worst record in the League at the Yanks who are only two games over .500. Way to go ESPN.

Not really we've seen teams have a great first half only to fade at the break
Billy Beane's A's are usually stronger in the second half of the season.

quote:That's because ESPN seems to think the rest of the country only cares about the Yanks & the Red Sux. Been that way for over 10yrs. Pisses me off to no end. frick both of those teams.
Way to go ESPN.

MLB Extra Innings and you don't have to watch ESPN

They will absolutely win the division. They have a really good chance to get over the hump and make the World Series this year.

The A's are the class of the AL and all of baseball. Josh Donaldson is the best third baseman in the game. Brandon Moss has major pop. Derek Norris is slashing 300/400/500. Yoenis Cespedes is an animal with a cannon. Sonny Gray has all the makings of an ace. Sean Doolittle has been lights out since he took over as closer. Jesse Chavez is a legit quality starter. They have really good bats throughout the lineup and impressive arms as usual.
