As a fairly new parent this is probably my biggest fear.

I can't imagine what they would feel like to be the guilty parent.

I'm not especially sympathetic when this happens usually, but the guy's reaction here sounds like it was one of total desperation and guilt.

You cannot even satirize this shite. My god.

quote:

According to Cobb County police, the father of the toddler was supposed to drop the baby off at daycare, but forgot. The father then drove to work around 9 a.m. Wednesday and left the baby in the car. It wasn't until the man left work and started driving home that he looked in the backseat and saw the child still strapped in the car seat and unresponsive.

Recommended reading on these incidents.

Fatal Distraction

Forgetting a child in the back seat of a hot, parked car is a horrifying, inexcusable mistake. But is it a crime?

Horrible situation all around. I've gotten 10 minutes down the road before, when my toddler finally said something from the back seat and I remembered I forgot to take her to the babysitters. Morning mind fogs suck.

It's scary because it can happen to anyone.

8 hours?

I am guilty of leaving the truck running, running into the corner store and grabbing things while the baby is asleep in the car seat.

it is a shame we hear stories like this every summer

This is just the worst. Honestly, I cannot imagine.

I'd rather die than have this happen to me.

These stories always put me in the parents' shoes with my son being the kid. I don't really make it through the story at that point. I'd probably kill myself if I ever left my son to die like that.

I really cannot understand how this happens. Could have something to do with priorities.

This can happen easily with the right mix of distractions and a sleeping child.

I was out running errands one afternoon. Mind starts drifting and you forget the kid is in back. I didn't leave the car, but it shocked me enough to think for a few minutes you could slip and make a tragic error.

This scares the shite out of me and I'm not even married or with kids.

There are interesting readings on the dangers of routines on your consciousness. Especially in the morning when you wake up.

I'd imagine the great deal of these tragedies occur when the parent that doesn't usually drop the kid off has to take a turn. They're all very similar to this one.

One thing people could do to prevent this is to leave your cellphone on the back seat next to the kid before you start driving. Sad to say this, but you are bound to notice a missing cell phone sooner than you realize you forgot your infant in the car. This could almost be a fool proof method to prevent these tragedies from happening.

I plan to tie yarn to the car seat and then to my wrist while driving when our little boy comes in September. This is a huge fear of mine.

If you can't remember that your child is in the car you are a shitty parent. Not once in my 7 years of being a dad have i forgotten that my child was with me. This guy should be punished for this.
