I've never understood how the spool is so hard for people to figure out
As for that gator thing, wait until a piece goes flying off and cracks you in the leg. Anything other than a regular feeding head is just a gimmick.
Fwiw, I spent 2.5hrs nonstop weed eating 36" weeds on Wednesday and went through two gas tanks full of gas. You don't need anything special to weed eat high grass
Eta: The regular Echo head is like $45 and the speed feed one is like $38

I only ran into that problem when up next to my fence. But my old 2-cycle finally died a couple years ago, and I got a 4-cycle to replace it. First thing I did was install the metal bladed gator equivalent. 2 years later and I'm still on the same 3 original blades. They're a little worn on the ends, but still cut weeds, monkey grass, and small limbs/twigs great.
