Nice strong response by the police department here.

SALT LAKE CITY (TheBlaze/AP) — A Salt Lake City police officer has been placed on leave and is under investigation after refusing an assignment to work at a gay pride parade. The officer was among about 30 assigned to provide traffic control and security for the annual Utah Pride Parade on Sunday in Salt Lake City, said department spokeswoman Lara Jones.

“We don’t tolerate bias and bigotry in the department, and assignments are assignments … To allow personal opinion to enter into whether an officer will take a post is not something that can be tolerated in a police department,” Jones told KSL-TV. The officer, whose name was not released, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation. Jones declined comment on the officer’s reason for refusing the assignment.

You would also be against said cop not working a KKK rally, correct?

Can't argue with that.

Should a shot a dog instead and gotten promoted.

If that was his assignment, he should have shut his damned mouth and did his duty.

He can practice his bigotry in his private life. Good for the SLC pd.

He cannot discriminate when he is being paid for with public dollars. We can't allow public employees to pick what events to work and what not to. That's discrimination with public dollars.
In short, this cop is a goddamn moron. If you don't want to work an event like this, turn in your gun and badge.

Very intolerant of the police chief there...not to recognize the sensibilities of his employees. I'd be looking for a new job if the chief forced me to do something I didn't want to do.

Should have called in sick.

I think the bigger story here is gay price parades in Utah.

I wonder if the nazis used this same argument against German soldiers who disagreed with the State.

Do cops get hazard pay for working the gay pride parades? They are putting their asses on the line after all.

I have no issue with this. He isn't a private actor.

Don't know his reasons but on the surface, regardless of how you feel. Do your job.

Good. A cop shouldn't pick and choose assignments. They deal with rapists, murderers, and the gays.

I just find the supposed Libertarian nature of this board interesting when it comes to an individual protesting working an event that contradicts his/her moral beliefs in favor of the majority. If it comes with the territory as part of working for the State, perhaps I can understand that argument. But good for the person who didn't blindly follow orders.
ETA: Hell, I guess an individual throws his/her civil rights out the window when they decide to work for the State. Is that the attitude I'm getting from this board?

The guy refused to take a post he was ordered to take and he was disciplined.
I don't have any problem with that.
But what is there to investigate?
