He has made me want to start cheering against him. The trainer expected him to apologize. Also, chrome gets 8 weeks off. Guessing no del mar and then they train up to classic? I love the horse but I'm almost starting to hope he never wins again. This idiot should be grateful for what he has and he's not. I hope the fillies turn out to be duds and that mare never produces another winner.

Nope. Maybe for the partner but not for coburn.
You got lucky with the first horse you bred. Savor it. Be happy that you produced a multiple grade 1 winner. Stop being an arse in the media.
They should have taken the 2 mil for the mare because you can never keep producing the same horse. Look at Barbaro's full brothers. They will never have this same success again out of that mare. And I'm happy about it because the man actually has no idea how to be gracious. I wonder how many other fans of the horse he's turned off?

Horses do fly at times, recently put 41 yearlings up a ramp on a plane to Ireland for training

This guy bought into the hype and loved every second of being the toast of the town for 6 weeks. He fully thought THIS Cinderella story (and all 11 before him were Cinderella stories) was going to come true. When it didn't he acted like a petulant child, calling the circumstances surrounding the loss unfair. Now the big party is over, and he doesn't want to go home. Instead of just recognizing that winning the TC is a very tough thing to do, he made an arse of himself and turned off the general fan who liked his story.
The sad thing is that his complaints will resonate with many bozos who know nothing about horse racing, and who's outlook on life is if something is difficult to achieve, just change the rules to make it easier. Someone should slap a big ole "Participation" ribbon on his fat arse (the owner, not the horse)

Owning race horses is very frustrating, I own a few and have many friends that do as well. Most are struggling to pay the skyrocketing expense that goes with horse racing. If you are not based in Kentucky, you will not be eligible for much of the incentive awards that accompany the purse in many races. Although my horses are bred to Kentucky stallions in Kentucky they do not qualify as "Kentucky bred" as they are born on my farm outside Kentucky. I agree with Coburns statements about Churchill Downs, although every other track in Kentucky is very accommodating, and will help the owners . Horse racing needs a Triple Crown winner. I dont believe that there has not been a great horse in the last 37 years. You cant hold the publics interest with 40 years between great horses...horse racing seems to be in an irreversible decline unfortunately.

I do agree with his Churchill statements, but that's because we've been dealing with their horrible handling of the fairgrounds down here. He is also not the only person to rant on them. I will say again, maybe you should run in a state with a better incentive program.
Down here you can still breed to out of state stallions every other year, and the incentives and state bred stakes are good. We are even getting better stallions standing in state. What state are you in that you ship to ky to run? Why not board the mares in ky so they are eligible? There are a few things that can be done to qualify your horses for the incentives.

the owner was on gma this morning and looked even worse. he compared chrome running against fresh horses to him playing basketball against a kid in a wheel chair.
Not surprising - guy is an old cowboy-type...
From Arizona up through dusty Central Valley in California...there is no truer maxim...you see these old cowboy farts and they all just don't give a shite...
...and frankly don't understand our PC or public decorum ways.
You see them once you go inland in Cali...there's something about getting to a certain age...where these guys just say phuck it - and stop trying to appease people - living out away from everyone - among horses, cattle, etc...nice people...but they just don't give shite about what society says is right.

Idk, I'd take the kid in a wheelchair.

Im assuming you are in florida which is just too far away for me . I am only about 100 miles from Kentucky....but I have considered buying a small farm there just to foal on. Foaling on a big Kentucky farm adds a lot of unnecessary expense when you deal with several horses a year

I'm in Louisiana. They've really started stepping things up as far as breeding goes. Husband has a war front, a kittens joy, and a causeway coming into the barn next year, all la breds (none ownedby us, obviously. I'm poor).
I haven't looked into it too much, but I think Indiana has a decent incentive program. That's a little closer than Florida.

Was he this upset when Alabama got to sit out the SEC championship but play in the National Championship? If already mentioned in the thread I apologize.

Why do horses not hold like they used to? I would think that with more knowledge and technology in training they would be stronger and more durable now. I also hear that horses used to be trained for stamina but are now bred and trained for speed and thats one reason they don't hold up, is that true?
Good question. It's even more strange as they don't run nearly as often as they used to.
But I'd guess inbreeding.
I also think that the Breeders Cup has hurt the sport - can't exactly pinpoint why, other than it's made the entire late summer/early fall a series of prep races.
Also, do yall remember all of the 2YO races they used to run down here and elsewhere? Delta used to run a 250K jean Lafitte for 2 year olds in MARCH! Now they don't run any 2YO races. Evangeline would run a Futurity on July 4, with a full card of full-field trials leading up to it. Spring 2YO racing has virtually ended - probably because the horses can't take it anymore.....and because they are all prepping for the Breeders Cup.

This sounds like a bunch of shite. You have a fast horse, show up. Who gives a frick where it was born. Then again, it begs the question, who gives a frick about horse racing.

Yeah, I don't understand this either.

It doesn't matter where, it just has to be registered.

Go see how much money Churchill Downs makes on Derby Day alone. That alone will tell you there's a few.
