Michigan's attendance problems...I think we can relate

While student tickets at LSU are very fair at $12 a game, some of the problems addressed in this article definitely feel familiar. I'm not saying we're having the same problems, but I think we're closer than we realize.
I know the bigger scoreboard being an electronic billboard was a one year thing, and boy was it horrible. But it's things like that, and in stadium promotions for mcdonald's or coke zero for every timeout (with Georgia's played other games across the country) kills the crowd.

If that’s true, maybe they shouldn’t have increased seat prices by an average of $100 each since Brandon took over. Perhaps they should stop charging six bucks for a hot dog, five bucks for popcorn, and four dollars for water. Maybe they should stop showing ads between plays on the big screens for corporate receptions at Michigan stadium, which start at $9,000. Fans can get all those things at home for less, including the ads. They can only get the marching band at the big house.

Survey after survey points the finger for low attendance not at cell phone service or high definition TV, but squarely at the athletic department and college football itself. Fans are fed up paying steakhouse prices for junk food opponents — and junk food itself — while enduring endless promotions. The more college football caters to the TV audience at home, the more fans paying to sit in those seats feel like suckers.

After a friend of mine took his kids to a game, he told me, “Michigan athletics used to feel like something we shared. Now it’s something they hoard. Anything of value they put a price tag on. Anything that appeals to anyone is kept locked away—literally, in some cases—and only brought out if you pay for it. And what’s been permanently banished is any sense of generosity.”

I think the thing that aggravated me the most is/was the nickel and dimeing of the tailgaiters

I completely agree. LSU is very close to the same problem-people staying at home and watching the game on TV. A family of four with season tickets will probably spend around $8 to $10,000 per year. Saban is a really good coach but $7 Million a year is just stupid.

Well, at least Michigan fans can get wi-fi on their smart phones inside of their stadium.

People keep posting that on here, but can someone actually provide a link to a credible news source that quotes an LSU official saying that they are going to take down all of those ads this season?

IMO, if they serve beer, problem solved.

Love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Greed has and still is bringing down the general economy and spills over into any endeavor which can be squeezed to the nth degree until it is unrecognizable. There are some greedy SOB's in this country who are determined to get theirs no matter what they destroy in the process.

I read that whole article and I see lots of similarities. Tiger Stadium is also not the same as it once was, and for me (and many others who post here)it is due to the over-marketing that we have to sit through at the stadium and the feeling that the athletic department is trying to stick their hand in my pockets to grab more money.
I read the comments below the article, and this comment, from an Oklahoma Sooner fan who can also relate, hit home...
It isn't just us. This happens everywhere. And it is a shame.

I’m not there to listen to headbanger music blared over the PA instead of hearing the marching band. I’m not there to watch people wave at the “fan cam” on the jumbotron, which is sponsored by a regional convenience store. I’m not there to see incessant marketing and donor recognition on the field.

Treat your fans like customers long enough, and eventually they’ll start behaving that way, reducing their irrational love for their team to a cool-headed, dollars-and-cents decision to buy tickets or not, with no more emotional investment than deciding whether to go to the movies.
Nailed it.

I don't get the "i would rather watch it on TV mindset".
And i hope i never will

Northwestern University is trying a Dutch auction they call purple pricing. They do something similar for football.
Purple Pricing

They've manage to price lots of fans out.
I can afford it, I just choose not to.
Crap games is what's really done it for me though.
I'm not paying anything to see LSU play Appalachian state wanna be team.

The home schedule usually consists of 1 great game, 1 or 2 good games and the rest is garbage. Most seats are uncomfortable. Concession prices are way too high. I see less ads when i watch on tv than i do in the stadium. And basically unless you stare at the ribbon scoreboard on the east side waiting for stats or other games scores to pop up, you will never know. Why bother going in the stadium now a days? Its not like the band does much anymore either besides the 1st-4th down stuff.

It will be interesting to see what the next economic turndown brings to major college athletics.
Will middle class alumni prevail or will the corporations fully take over the process?
The alumni association needs a better relationship with TAF. Start there because the nickel and dining of alumni and fans is a serious concern for all involved.

Today's world? Wow, what a deal.
Mine were $20 back in the 90's at USC. And today they're $30.
$12?? For the price of a small pizza...How can people not go to the games?

To me, it is the advertising. It is EVERYWHERE. I feel less like at a football or baseball game and more like I am being sold a product or service the entire time. Take baseball, the beautiful new stadium is non-stop advertising. Even the cup holders have ads. Everywhere you look there is something somewhere being sold to you. Inbetween innings and plays we get bombarded with crappy commercial after commercial. The same is true with Tiger Stadium. Just about every available surface for advertising is being utilized. Having been to games for 30 years I can tell you this is sucking the experience out of the game. I feel less part of the environment and more of a "theater goer" or bystander.
Ads are part of sports so I am not suggesting we get rid of them altogether. They play an important part in generating revenue. Perhaps the athletic department should find a better balance and seek alternative avenues of revenue.

I agree LSU is on the slippery slope of a serious declining attendance issue.
LS has elite tailgating which will keep fans showing up, however LSU has tried to limit tailgating; trailer parking fees, limited trash cans, etc...
LSU also has a severe disconnect with administration and fans. They have royally screwed up parking and ease of getting To a game. 3-4 yrs ago lots of tailgating and traffic was good considering the amount of people and now we have fewer people attending games and a traffic nightmare. LSU is just a few small changes of getting people back.
Make ease of getting to a game easier by car and entering a gate of the stadium. Encourage fans to tailgate.

I love my Tigers, and I live in Houston, but if you think I am paying $140 per ticket, no way! We are talking a college game, not a professional team! The average working Middle Class family (what's left of it!) cannot keep up with rising ticket prices, not to mention, food, gas, etc. has gone up, but not salaries! Hate to see it, but the college game is starting to be like pro teams- corporate tickets only appears to be the future...

What's ultimately happening is that the university is now charging ticket-holders more money for a substantially worse product. Basic economics dictate that such a model is simply not sustainable.
Take away all the bullshite ads, at least try to lessen the traffic woes, quit charging people to park on campus, stop blaring terrible music every time there's a break in the action, and your average fan will be a lot more willing to pay more for tickets and actually attend the games. Restore the gameday experience for the fans, and enthusiasm will follow suit.
But as it stands now, people are having to fork out a lot more money for an experience that isn't nearly as enjoyable as it once was. They're leveraging the reputation of Tiger Stadium into a more expensive yet simultaneously "cheaper" product.
