Could Benson get a billion for the Pels

Now that clippers broke the bank and we look to possibly be the next new hot young team in the west with a once in a lifetime superstar as the cornerstone (saying we can get rid of the "cornerstone")
Or does he need to go off on some racist tirade with his slam piece first?

Don't be absurd. But if the bucks got $550 million...

Benson is loving this. Bought an NBA team for 350mil? Has a bonafide top 3 superstar on the team, and some crap team just sold for 550mil. If he sold to someone looking to move the team to Seattle he could get well above 550.
Makes me wonder what the next NFL team is going to sell for, and how much he could sell the Saints for...

i seriously put a billion dollar tag on just the drama... no way clip go for more than a single billion before the drama
I think this sale just upped all the franchises..... guess you just need one dumbass willing to over pay for something in the news

I dunno about 1B, but I bet he could flip the team for 750M. Not a bad ROI. Mrs Gayle made a very smart investment.

Eh. Ballmer over paid and the deadline Shelly set certainty helped, but the other bids were ~ 1.6B which is probably not too far off.
Sterling, aside from being a true piece of shite, was a horrendous NBA owner. He did nothing for that team for 30 years. In one of the biggest markets in the country.
Lakers make $150M/year in local tv, Clips $20M. There is tremendous untapped value in that team

Ballmer missed on buying like 3 teams, right?
I think he overbid because he didnt want to lose another one. Should be interesting to see what he will do with that franchise.

has everything to do with the TV deals...
just like baseball...
from Price Paid: $12 M in 1981, to $2 billion, in 33 years... wow
imagine what the Lakers or Knicks would go for today... $3 billion?

New Orleans is the smallest TV market in the NBA currently, so I doubt they would could for that much.
The new TV deal coming up has sort of upped the price of these teams. The Grizz sold for about 370 about 2 years ago and then the Bucks sold for 550. I would say the Pels would probably go for more than the Bucks.
The Clippers was an interesting circumstance. They a large amount of star power right now and are located in LA. Having multiple bids coming in at once and an sped up sales process likely overpriced the team.
eta: Just saw this on r/NBA

Clips were a one time perfect storm of a forced sale of an undervalued asset with no debt
pels would be most valuable as a relocatable asset which would be unlikely to be approved by the nba
The market I think has been set at 500MM

He kept them in LA proper, which is a bigger reason for the price tag than his tirade.
This sale will have little effect on the rest of the league. 2 years ago, nobody even wanted the hornets, you think now that someone overpaid to have a team in LA that they could be sold for nearly 3x what they were just purchased for (directed at OP)?
Seriously, that is like saying a house on St. Charles ave that needs a little work just sold for $2M, so my house of similar sqft in Covington, that had been sitting on the market for 18 months before getting sold at $350k is suddenly worth $1M. The potential revenue in LA far exceeds any sport franchise in Nola, and the price tag will reflect that.
Did he over pay? Probably, but I'm sure the former CEO of fricking Microsoft has access to some advanced financial modeling resources to guide his bid, that may have even valued them at $2.5B. People are acting like these billion dollar transactions are completely arbitrary decisions.

To add to your point, these deals are based on future income, not historical performance. The spurs, for instance, would likely not be sold for $1B, even though they are in a decent size market, its not the 2nd largest in the country.

That and the fact that Ballmer has frick You money, is retired, and is a hoops junkie. Half a billion doesn't move his register much, especially for something he's passionate about and a product that will make his money back.

they said it's only like 10% of his net worth. it's more than likely no different than you or i buying a nice car to him. not quite pocket change, obviously, but not over the top money for him.

An "expert" was on ESPN yesterday and said that he felt all NBA team would now be valued at a minimum of $1B now. Interestingly, he said that we have now had 2 teams sold in the #2 and #3 sports in the country for $2B (+) (Dodgers and Clippers) and that any NFL should top that with no problem.
So, Benson is sitting on the Saints (which he bought for $74M) and the Pells (which he bought for $330M) with a combined value of $3B. He is the richest man in the state...by long shot!

we'd probably be in that range
the clippers situation was a rare chance to buy an NBA team in a major market (i struggle to call it a top NBA team)
also, there was a very quick bidding where one guy big WAY over value to ensure that he won. ballmer bid like 2B and the other bids were reported to be 1.2 and 1.6. that's a HUGE premium paid on top of a major premium
if AD is signed long-term, we would probably max in the 650-700m range, tops, if somebody wanted to overpay. the kings went for 534M and the bucks for 550M. we're in that small market range (but with a superstar, we would get a bump)

yes
and he has tens of billions and wants toys. he gives 0 fricks at this point other than acquiring an NBA team on the west coast
