I am in the process of moving to Dallas now for my job. The public schools here are crazy how nice they are (especially out in the burbs). I'm going to hate paying my new property tax at first, but it will all even out.
I doubt any high school in La even has 60 mil much less able to spend it on a football stadium.
I think the key is the size of these districts in TX. Moving from BR to the North ATL suburbs, I was awestruck by the size of the schools. My HS in BR was about 1K. Our cluster HS here is at 3K.
I think Allen is like twice that. It's insane, but they seem to have the tax base for it.

moved here{TX) from FL 8 yrs. ago, I'm paying twice the taxes, they were high there, but I was on the water, ocean access, etc., not so much here

That school district is laying off teachers?
No

It was voted on by people living in the district, and I'm assuming it was paid for by a local gov bond issuance. If that's what they want to do more power to them.
Exactly

Allen has over 4k high school students, the band has 900 members alone. Crazy big

that stadium wasn't built yesterday, and I don't feel like doing any research on this today, but when they were trying to raise support to push this through, teachers were being laid off all through the metroplex, and there was a statewide push to cut pay, pension, and benefits(supported by Perry)
in our district, at the time, there was a proposed tax increase to give to surrounding ISDs to subsidize their shortfalls, maybe Allen did something like this?

Yep. And it's a very fine high school. It's as good as a lot of private schools. That's just very hard for some on here to wrap their head around.

who cares if teachers in a neighboring district were being laid off? what does that have to do with the taxpayers in Allen ISD? they have no responsibility to the rest of the metroplex.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Sounds like the 3rd party testing firm and construction company was way over their head. This will all come down to the insurance company, and if they will honor their bond.

So they kept their money in their district and paid for the stadium themselves?
Can you really blame them?

got no dog in this hunt, the question was posed why would anyone care about the money spent on the stadium, my response was one that put out there at the time, Allen is in the metroplex, btw

sounds like design flaws more so than construction related issues... and 3rd party testing labs are hired by the Owner, independent of design/construction teams.
You could xray the slab on just about any building in america and find 1" discrepencies in rebar placement... that kinda stuff shouldn't be blamed for this level of failure... this is almost all on the design team, specifically the structural engineer.... who was hired by the arch... who was then hired by the owner... you get what you pay for.

yeah, we all get that.
do you understand that Allen is an independent school district that has no responsibility to any other school district?

I went to high school in San Antonio. It was pretty small at 2,800 but there was a school in the district that was over 6,000. Freaking behemoth. Naturally, their football team destroyed everyone in the district in its heyday. I think my alma mater is better though.....? The QB from Oklahoma that won over Bama this past year is from my old high school

I do, and I live in the metroplex, did you read my earlier post about a tax proposal in our ISD that would go to supplement area ISDs?

Texas is full of idiots. This is hilarious.

quote:You are correct, sir. The testing lab will only test things like the compressive strength of the concrete, the placement of the steel, etc., to ensure conformance with the plans and specifications. If there were errors in the design documents, that is not the fault of the testing lab.
