Baby bass for fish tank.

So looking to find some baby bass for my small aquarium. I was thinking about going to some known bass spots and throwing the cast net. Anyone ever done this? Is this a good time of year for them? Any specific techniques?

Had a few in a 75 gallon aquarium in college.

just get a dipnet and scoop around the submerged grass. all sorts of stuff in there.
i'd want a choupique for an aquarium.

Had several through the years. Some did well, some died within a few days. If you have bream in there, they'll beat the crap out of the bass. One bass I had would hit a tube jig every time. It was fun sitting across the living room and pitching through the 4" hole in the tank on beer nights. Was a fun time for a single man.
The best method for catching small bass is to go pay silly high prices for shiners in hopes of catching sacalait. I always catch every 6" bass in a pond when doing so.

I had one for years in high school. Caught him with a dip net and transplanted him. He got as large as his tank would allow. He loved crickets. Rip, Bassey.

Just be gentle with him. Cast-netting a fish is pretty traumatic for them and can be rough on them. I would much rather catch one one rod/reel for an aquarium than cast net one.

very fun watching them feed. You can drop food opposite side of tank and within a second the bass darts to gobble it up.

fwiw, I had to clear some grass off a boat launch at tickfaw this past weekend
tons of baby critters came up tangled in the grass, lots of 2-in bream, sacalait, and even a few chain pickerels, but not one single bass

When I was in college we caught some in the spillway in plaquemine, I was living at southgate towers and we turned them loose in the coy pond. Those bass had killed every golf fish in that thing in a few days. I wonder if those bass are still dominating that coy pond....

Go to the nearest large drainage ditch that holds water and fish with a small beetle spin. You should be able to catch a baby bass in no time.
They are fun as hell. Sometimes at the wal marks they would have a few grass shrimp that our bass loved to eat. But the bass couldn't see the shrimp (since they're clear) unless the aquarium light was on. We'd wait till he nosed right up to the shrimp, ready to eat, and we'd turn the light off. He would look around confused like the shrimp had just disappeared and then swim off.

BTW, a game warden told me this was illegal.
I guess it would be a big deal if you had 100's of bass.

I had a gret freshwater aquarium with plenty local species in it when I was younger. Some cool things that I had in mine are are choupique, river shrimp, golden topwater minnow, blue catfish, sacalait, and hogchoker flounder. I caught the hogchoker in the atchafalaya river throwing the cast net. They come up river during certain times of the year and are able to tolerate freshwater.
