Say you get an offer letter but the salary doesn't meet expectations...I asked the director if we could talk about the letter before another one is produced since some dates were off...I have to call him this morning.

Is there any room for movement on the salary?
Any way you could up the salary 5-7%?
I had hoped the salary would be more of an incentive...

WTF do I say? I've never negotiated salary. Do I barter with healthcare costs, or bring up 401k matching? There are tons of details I don't know, like paid time off per year...maybe this is a way to lead into the conversations. Basically say it's tough to judge the total compensation since I don't know the details, but that if all things are equal it seems a bit low.

shite.

Ask for the salary you want + 10,000 dollars

If you are good at your job and valuable, the rest will take care of itself

Just ask.
Tell them I need it to be X.

Understand where ya coming from. I negotiated and got an increase. It was kind of awkward and you dont want to turn them off because you are starting fresh, but theres no reason why not discuss it.

You will usually get close to what you want

I just go into my bosses office and demand it. Plain and simple.

There are website that compare salary by position and city. If you feel you can get more just ask. You gotta be a great candidate to get it though. For my current job I had to put on my application what my desired salary would be so I added 30% and then rounded up. They offered another $10 on top of that. Made me feel desired. If they had low balled me I doubt I would have accepted because that reflects on future salary issues.

I had written out an entire speech highlighting why I deserved a pay increase and was going to speak my mind at my next review. Out of the blue I was called in and told my pay had increased more than what I was going to ask. That's my only experience

are you dead set on taking the offer?

for my current position, we discussed salary before any offer letter was drawn up

the salary i was offered in the letter was actually a little higher than we discussed

Take everything into consideration...vacation time...401k match...sick time. Additional benefits like free company life insurance...bonus and of course salary. Typically there is a 20% range for each job band and they don't ever start there. You need to understand your situation and theirs. If they love you and have no other options you can slow play them while waiting on a pending offer from another firm...If you are unemployed I wouldn't play with fire

Companies want you for the least amount and you want to be hired for the most amount of money. Find some middle ground that works for everyone. I have had good luck negotiating additional vacation time and an increase in salary. If they are not willing to give you additional money up front, discuss a raise in 60-90 days.

I've always thought it was funny that so many people are uncomfortable with talking about money during a job interview.

When asked about expected pay, my typical response is:

"I know most people feel uncomfortable talking about pay, but it is an important deciding factor. I am looking at the total compensation package, not just monthly pay, and it is very attractive. BUT I really need to be at XX amount when the dust settles."

Also, whenever I filled out an online application, I would always select inflate my desired pay to allow some room for negotiation if it went that far.

This is an interesting topic to me as I am thinking about asking for more $.....I have been in this job for almost a year (first week in June) and just finished my degree....this is a tech position in which I am willing to stay because I want to be in the area but I know that I could potentially start out somewhere else higher than what I currently make now...how should I proceed and what is fair?...these are tough questions...I think I am going to ask for an extra dollar an hour to hold me over for awhile until I am ready to change careers and utilize my degree...in this situation I left a good company because this one was in crisis and needed my help...they did bump me when I came over and I brought knowledge with me, but there is no management or supervisory opportunity here...which is what my degree is in...

Try to find out what that position normally pays. Find out all of the benefits that they offer. If they initially ask you what you want, give them a range. Once they make an offer, point out all of the benefits you will lose and what value you will bring to them. Counter with a higher salary than you are shooting for as they will probably counter again.

Just did this a month ago. They asked what I wanted, I gave a range. They offered the bottom of the range. I countered pointing out the vacation days I would lose as well as the reduction in annual bonus. I countered with a number 4k more than I was looking for and they just accepted my counter. I did have inside knowledge of the salary range of the position so that helped

See if you can negotiate hair transplants into your compensation package.
