Most of the R&B artists you listed had better stuff in the 80's, especially Whitney Houston and MJ. Metallica was terrible in the 90's, so move them to the 80's as well.

I'll give you country and rock. No idea on rap. It never interested me.

most people on this board will say either 60s, 70s, Phish, or Drake

I get the superstar angle, but other than Grunge (which had some great stuff but also spawned a whole generation of mumbling frontmen)the 90's wasn't much of an inventive decade. I'd maybe add Reznor, Chemical Bros etc. as something that hadn't really been seen before.

I would probably the 70s

The 90s had a great start but then fizzled a good bit in the late 90s. With clear channel hegemony and few alterntive ways emerging to enable user choice, the shite that came out wasn't that good.

I'm gonna have to say the 60s. Some of the most influential bands and artists are from the 60s. There are ton but here's a few. For me, just these few make the 60s the greatest....

Beatles
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
Johnny Cash
Waylon Jennings

So, you list superstar bands from the 90's and leave out TOOL and Radiohead?

That is what you call metal?

Nah man, even though the 90's were my formative years, I gotta go with the 80's! As cheesy and lame as some of 80's music may have been, there was a LOT of awesome tunes and no other decade was as unique as the 80's! I personally like synthesizers, and I just like the aura of an 80's song, it's a whole different world than today's music, which is fine with me, because apart from a few songs here and there, the majority of the "Top 40" songs of today are crappola in my opinion!!

Honestly, if your going by this, each decade had it's fair share of superstars in each genre. Any of us can easily insert the same amount, if not more, superstar artists in each of your categories. And some decades didn't have any superstars in certain genres because the genre didn't exist.

Furthermore, a good number of the artists you listed had as good as if not bigger hits in the 80s. And a good number of them started in the 80s. Same can be said about a good number of 80s artists starting in the 70s, and so on.

IMO: I liked 90s music, but the whole "woe is me" sound started to get old by the mid 90s. There's a reason country had a huge success in the 90s with probably more fans than ever before.......
