How good defensively is Portugal?
I only know of Pepe and Coentrao.

Outside of Ronaldo, Ghanas squad looks more formidable to me, but that may be because I mostly watch the EPL.

Portugal is a good team. I think they were overrated for a while then become underrated. However, I think there are more scenarios where we can advance than what he said. I think we can draw Ghana and Portugal and face a Germany team that already has 1st place locked up and get a win.

I don't like our group but I think we're lucky that we got Germany last.

Good, and their midfield is very experienced/wildly talented depending upon who is going to play this summer

I don't really understand how a front line of Ronaldo and two passengers turned into a team of Ronaldo and ten passengers after we drew them in the World Cup. I guess people are reading more into their playoff appearance than is probably warranted since they seem to end up in the playoffs regularly now without it affecting their performance in the actual tournament.

Why do people keep thinking we need 4 points heading into the Germany game plus Germany will be resting players?

If Germany is at 6 points and we are at 4 when we play, there is ZERO chance they rest anyone. If we beat them, we win the group. They ain't chancing that.

ONLY way Germany rests guys against us if we are stuck at 3 (or 2) (same with Ghana Portugal too) and they have 6 and a great goal differential.

That's actually a good point.

As far as CB pairing goes, I'll echo what I said in another thread in that I think while Gonzo and Besler have the experience together I still don't trust Gonzalez. At all. I'd prefer Goodson for his experience. Hypothetically I think Gooch and Besler might be our best pairing, but we would need to see them in action together in the pre WC friendlies... crossing my fingers that Jurgen tests the waters with those two.

Agree to draw or carpet bomb Dresden.

Yeah I don't expect Germany to rest players, regardless of the circumstances. Team chemistry and all that.

The US is good, don't get me wrong, but it will take something damn special for them to make it out of the group. Someone said a heroic game from Howard (probably 3 heroic games) but I think the entire tournament hinges on the defense. We will live and die by our back four.

I think it should be match-up specific.

Goodson for the Germany game as Gonzo's lapses will cost us big time.

Gonzo for Ghana for physicality and athleticism. Gonzo for Portugal as well for that same reason. They also rely upon CR too much.

All I know is that 9 points would be awesome.

0 or 1 would suck.

Is Gooch even a regular starter at Sheffield?

I think its pointless to look elsewhere at this point. Besler/Gonzalez have continuity together and they deserve the start in Brazil, seeing as which they got us there. The time with toying with the lineup is over. We are 50 days out.

He starts every match for Wednesday and goes the full 90 minutes. He is consistently rated amongst the best players there and the team has seen a pretty big turn around since he arrived. He's playing in a better league than Omar, has more international experience, and provides an offensive threat from set pieces that Omar has yet to show.

You say the time for toying with the lineup is over, but why bother with the three friendlies before the WC if that was the case. There is still plenty of time to make adjustments.

Besides, Jurgen himself has expressed interest in bringing Gooch to Brazil.

What's your source on all this. I haven't heard a thing about him.

I guess I should revise. The time for tinkering with our cbs is over. Pick two and live or die with them. Onyewu hasn't played with Gonzalez or Besler for the entire cycle. When's the last competitive international game he's played in?

Too many questions for me. I'll take the two that got us there. They'll show up for us

I definitely prefer Gooch to Omar right now.

Brooks is going to finish the season out starting for HB. I'm interested to see how he does. Apparently, he played an EXCELLENT game over the weekend.

The fact that we are talking about if Gonzalez or Gooch will start 50 days from the WC against lets see... Portugal and Germany is scary. I mean really? Not that it's news to me or any one, but this is a huge problem to me. If we don't have at least "consistent" play from our back line WE HAVE NO chance of making it out of this group.

Is there any formation or midfielder that jurgen could drop back to help out our back line on the Gonz/Gooch half?

Cameron will get a look at centre-half, no doubt in my mind.

We have Beckerman and Jones.

There is no reason in putting Cameron up in the midfield when we need so much more at right back or centerback.
