I suppose you have proof of this assumption?

I don't have the books or the slides anymore but it was talked about in several of my poli sci classes- specifically mass media, public opinion and political parties classes

eta- found some pew data. Numbers have changed a little bit since I last saw them but they're still pretty similar

I can recall Katie Couric asking him his favorite color and favorite ice cream in 2008.

That's GOTCHA JOURNALISM right there.

She might as well ask him "What do you read?"

I have a feeling the MSM's fervor for holding power in check will be "rediscovered" in 2016.

He has a POV that's pretty well known after over a decade on the air. There's equal treatment and then there's fair treatment. Stewart falls to the latter.

i think thats a pretty accurate assessment. hes certainly not disguising that he has an opinion on his show. while i may not agree with a lot of his stances i do respect that he will call out both sides on things that he doesnt agree with or when he thinks they are being dishonest.

People who watch The Daily Show or Colbert...

eta- and most identify as Independents, not Democrats

While the majority of the people who watch the Daily Show or Colbert are not democrats the plurality probably are.

Colbert: 12% republican, 38% independent, 45% democrat (14% conservative, 42% moderate, 40% liberal)
Daily Show: 10% republican, 41% independent, 45% democrat (14$ conservative, 42% moderate, 43% liberal)

Regarding your comment that watching the Daily Show and Colbert regularly means you are more likely to be informed there's some evidence to support that:

Some of this may be confounding since both the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are satirical send ups of current events (and a similar show from the right side of the spectrum might test similarly if you look at the lumped talk radio results). Anyway, there's more than one study with this type of finding (especially that Fox News probably ranks last in terms of quality if you evaluate viewer understanding of objective current events). Here's another one:

This is not to say other media are not substandard and sometimes terrible. The quality of CNN for example is also deplorable IMO. It just points out Fox may do the worst job of any of the media outlets.

So Obamas toughest interview was done by Comedy Central?

That says a lot about the Network News departments

Yea I misremembered the numbers.

My point still stands that they are informed and have a large independent/moderate audience.

Gotta love that our media is so terrible that watching Fox or MSNBC actually makes you less informed than if you had just broken your TV set and stared at the blank screen.

The whole D vs R shell game really boosts the ratings though!

So we're supposed to believe that people who watch no news are better informed on current events than people who watch Fox News ??? What a joke, I'd like to see the questions asked. And that goes for any news station if they ranked below "no news"

Looks like it was just asking about TV news. I don't watch any TV news and consider myself fairly informed regarding current events.

So you watch Fox News huh?

Fox News and msnbc are terrible at informing viewers because they're echo chambers- they only tell the audience what they want to here.

And the "no news" is tv news. Other forms of media are where they got answers

Draconian Sanctions once cited the Daily Show like it was some peer reviewed scholarly article. Tells me all I need to know about it.

Say what you will about his political leanings, but the guy delivers on interviews.

I actually watch zero news channels. I don't even have cable in my living room.

I am fairly well informed.

Well, in Fox's defense, their audience is huge, so there are still large raw numbers of well-informed people tuning in.

As MSNBC's audience is so small, relatively speaking, AND uninformed - I think that speaks for itself.
