On another front, my younger brother is an aerospace engineering student at auburn and will finish in june. He doesn't have any secure job prospects at the moment.

Then he is either being picky or is a dumbass/bottom of the class. I know a grad assistant in Aerospace and know that just about everyone who spends more than 5 minutes looking gets a job.

Most of my med student friends have the same amount of debt. I've seen double my amount at about 200k in student loans. Their job prospects aren't great either.

Again, if you are willing to move, there is a ton of optoins for doctors. Residency blows but once they make it out of residency, 200k for a doctor is not a big deal

I had quite a bit of money already saved up before I started working, so it wasn't that big of a deal for me. I don't suggest that.

Are you saying a $12k ring is too much in general, or that it was to much with his status at the time?

I have no idea

Making 50k a year and buying a 12k ring after year two.

Not too much in general. 12k to people with lots of fun coupons is a drop in the bucket

I've looked at them recently just for fun.

Besides knowing what to look for in a diamond (geology and mineral knowledge), I don't know what the frick in doing.

I'd be in rehab if I had $55k out of school. I had a little more than half that when I graduated and still had a good time.

1st "real" job - $26k a year

8 yrs later - $55k, plus bonuses and household is $80k with 2 small kids

Live very comfortably by our estimation, but perception is 9/10 of reality.

No college degree for me

I had 80k in the bank when I graduated school, and I saved up the 12k cash. I made closer to 75k by the end of year two (bonuses, car allowances start getting added). I don't think that 12k is smart for anyone, even myself . But it didn't kill me and we're doing alright.

Finished in 2010 in ME. Started at 47k at a government job (great benefits but no bonuses). 3 years later I own a house in Lakeview with my fiancé, so it's obviously enough money for just about anyone to live on.

I now have to figure out if I want to get a better paying job now (potentially a 25-30% raise) , or wait this one out and retire at 58.

and you didn't pay rent?

so let's not pretend like you had the same equal footing as most making $55k

Seems like we had the same amount of expendable cash when I was making 60k and the ole lady was still in school making zero as we do now that we make a helluva lot more than that. We just have more shite and do more stuff now. I need to go see Ken Ramsey or something.

I'm aware of that. Government jobs pay terribly, but I feel like I have a chance to move up and actually make a difference here. It's probably naivety, but I'm taking the PE in October and this place let's me study on the job, so I'll stick it out at least until then.

No, my situation was not normal at all. But I did save that much cash in addition to what was in savings.

I was lucky enough to live at my parent's for a while, because I travelled constantly my first year and never needed a home. That's why I didn't have rent. But I was able to eat out all of the time, go on fishing trips, drink at the bar, and save a lot of cash in the bank.

55k's a lot of money for a young single depending on where you're living. When I graduated from LSU 25 years ago I started at $18k.

Congrats on graduating. It won't be long and you'll wish you were still in school. Damn I miss those days.
